Do I have a bad battery?

My system has been acting up over the past couple weeks and I think it's related to the motherboard battery, but I'd like to hear from you before I take a ride to the store.

The problem I've been running across is when my system wakes up from a system standby. I hit the space bar to wake the system and I hear a high pitched beep (could be my ears, but it sounds higher pitched than boot-up beeps) and nothing happens. I hit the spacebar again or slide my mouse around and my system finally wakes up. The problem (other than the beep) is my clock settings are off on average of 5 hours each time this happens.

I wondered if this had anything to do with the system standby settings so last night I switched over to a screen saver and told my system to not go into standby. This morning I woke up and my system was in standby mode (don't know if the ss was running). I heard the beep again and my clock was off by the 5 or so hours (1am vs real time of 6am). I went into the control panel to check the standby settings and everything was still set to off.

Is the battery on my motherboard going bad (it's only 2 years old) or is there something else crapping out on my mb? Or could it be Win98 related? My system's specs are below. let me know if I left anything pertinent out.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chuck

The clock problem could well be battery related, but I'm not sure about the other problems your having, I've never ran into them. Batteries usually last a couple years so it wont hurt to replace it anyway and see if that solves the problem, they're only a couple bucks.
