I personally disables sound acceleration in unreal2003 and got a 20 frame boost.

I had a bud who got an audigy2 ran unreal tournament 2003 an enabled 3d sound and his frames increased by 30 or so.

what has your frames looked like after installing a better sound card?
 
They have not changed. The reason why your fps jumped while turning off the sound is cause it used less processing power to deliver quality sound. But I dont see how with your system (i suppose your using the one in your sig) getting a higher framerate with a better sound card.

Integrated audio generally eats more CPU cycles than a discrete sound card. Some sound cards these days (generally the cheap ones) are little more than integrated audio slapped on a card, so one needs to watch out a bit.

EDIT: To answer the question directly, no, but they do decrease the FPS less than a crappy sound card / integrated audio.

The only sound card I can see slowing down a card would be an onboard sound card. I disabled my AC97 and am running some low end sound blaster card:D
 
The point of a good card is to offload the sound processing to the card, and not done by the processor. It will allow the processor to handle more things, such as physics calculations. It won't raise your FPS, technically, but will allow your system to reach the rates it should be getting. Enabling hardware acceleration with a good sound card should improve performance, because it is forcing the sound card to do the work. It says it may hinder performance, but that's only if you have a shitty sound card.

Back in the day integrated audio may have had a more noticable performance hit. These days with 1ghz + processors, the required power to process sound isnt likely to hurt much, if at all compared to a more expensive card.
 
Solution = SELL YOUR EXPENSIVE SOUND CARDS, and just buy a USB DSP-400 with digital 5.1 sound, built in sound, so it doesn't drain the cpu during games :)
 
But, now you are draining the USB bus, which saps juice from other usb devices. The CPU still has to send the information to the sound card through the much more limited USB bus, which will actually decrese framerates.
 
nForce2 MCP-T Soundstorm gets more fps than most discrete solutions. Exception to the rule.
