I am using a linsys NSLU2 which is a network disk controller with some USB 2 external hard drive cases.

Does anyone know if the hard disks in external cases spin down after a while?
It just that i am using it for backup and I leave it on for 24/7. if the disk is spinning all that time, I am worried about reliability of the drive

thanks

Leaving it spinning would actually make the drive last longer than spinning it up and down all the time.

It is on spin up that most drives fail.

if you only run a backup once a week, just disconnect it the rest of the week. no reason to spin it if you're not going to use it.
