They do me. My sister has a friend round right now, and her laptop froze, so she asked me to fix it and when I got to the screen I was horrified, her resolution was set to 1024x768 ( it was meant to be 1280x800 ), startup items were still loading 10 minutes after she'd logged in and her internet explorer had FOUR crappy adware toolbars, and my htpc laptop that my sister was using ( listed in sig) logged in and opened firefox and everything else instantly.

Disccuss computing stupidity, stories are most excellent

A friend I use to work with asked me to come look at his pc for him. He said it was going super slow. After it took 15 minutes to get windows fully loaded I fired up Spybot that I brought on my thumb drive. It found 1500 items. He ended up just doing a reinstall of windows on it.

You should have turned on parental controls for him so he couldn't go to anymore porn sites. He'd thank you in the long run... lol

Sure, but these clueless computer users keep many people around here under a roof. ;)

What annoys me more are the out-of-the-box computer users.

Those sorts of things don't annoy me. It's the unwillingness to listen some people have that bothers me.

Not really, we were all clueless about PC's at one point or another.
What annoys me is telling someone not to do something like quit downloading spyware etc, and they don't listen and do it anyway. I want to smack em upside the head.

That is what bothers me, I will spend a day fixing, cleaning, updating someones computer and they love how much faster it is. Then a month later they call wondering why it is so slow again, when I showed them and told them what not to do so they would avoid this stuff.

Well, helping these types helps me make money...although I am technically a CAD Guy I have assumed the roll of company IT guy. It does drive me crazy when I get, Dan, could you have a look at my computer?" I go over and there is all thios crap running like Antivirus2009....then I have to spend hours trying to get rid of it and the boss over my shoulder going, "you think I should just replace it?" I'm like "uhhh no, just stop hitting okay to every message!" this will be the third time he's screwed up a computer beyond fixing! he's paying me though, so it is a lot more tolerable...lol last thing he did was actually BUY some crappy registry cleaning software. It wasn't actually malware ware but when i looked it up all the reviews I found gave it like 1-1/2 to 2 stars.

Oh OH and then he decides I'm to valuable to be dealing with this stuff and hires 2 flyby night "IT guys." Ends up paying them crap loads and then they dissapeared and it took me WEEKS to figure out what the heck they did and to get things running smoothly again!!! The only good thing about a bad econmy is it weeds out the shysters!!!

That and when the person turns off the av and doesn't run the spyware remover because the update pop-ups are "annoying" and using the spyware remover is too much "trouble".

I was talking to someone about virus' and spyware and he's like "I have a good anti virus program so I don't have to worry" I ask him what and he says "Norton":(

I'm annoyed by how my friend has his 1tb HD partitioned. He should have 100gb/400/500 so he could actually reinstall the OS every once in awhile and not have to install every single game again.

Wow. I'm in the same exact boat. The last one was me telling them the hard-drive was dying on a rig, and he goes and buys a Wallmart special - with vista - so the CAM software is now uncompatible! Good thing I stopped him from buying $5000 worth of newer software, and just get an XP disk.........of course a $50 hard drive would have made sense instead of a $500 computer.

The worst thing about clueless PC users is when they ask how to do something/ why something happened/ etc..........any I proceed to tell them, and I see that "glazed look" come over them because they have no freaking clue what I'm saying - they just keep smiling and nodding.

I work at a local PC store where I live, I'm the head tech here.

Clueless people don't bother me that much, when they start out apologizing that they don't know anything about computers and just want me to fix it, I understand it.

The people who make me mad are the people who are certified or have their own business and they don't know what they are doing. We work with wholesale people, so they have their own business, but its easier for them to just buy parts from us and we give them a discount as well.

Every now and then we get calls from them while they are at someone's house and they don't know how to fix the PC and we actually help them out. That pisses me off. Also one of them asked me how to backup outlook express. It's frustrating that this guy has his own business and knows less than I do. Makes me wonder wtf am I doing, I should have my own business!

But otherwise yeah no matter what we tell customers to do, they still will always download limewire, look at porn, and click every spyware ad that they see. I basically just don't care and hope that they do, hell they are the reason why I have a job :)

Also I would like to thank Dell. We get so many Dell computers its not even funny.
