Hi All -

We currently have three DNS servers here. Two internal (primary and secondary) and one external. We have started thinking about moving external DNS off to a hosted service...something like DNSMadeEasy. Good idea, bad idea? Why/why not?

Dyn's DynECT Managed DNS services are unmatched. If it's mission critical, it's worth it.

Why would it ever be a bad idea?

Additional thoughts:

When you say here - do you mean you're doing the authoritative DNS for your company onsite? This is an awful idea. Your internet goes down, and your presence on the internet simply disappears.

Third party managed DNS is ridiculously redundant, and it is faster than, and is more reliable than DIY.

I have quite a lot of experience with DNS, so shoot me a PM if you're interested in specific questions.

Having that in mind wouldn't Amazon Route 53 be something worth looking it?

Any decent Managed DNS provider has ddos mitigation in spades, as they deal with it on a daily basis.

Route 53 has no advanced features, and a pretty lousy user interface, though it does interface with the rest of their services.

The user interface for the service as provided by Amazon is pretty sad. That third party site aims to make it better. User interface features are not even what I was referring to at all, it was a side commentary.

Advanced DNS features are what I was talking about, sorry if I didn't make that clear.
 
Using DNSMadeEasy for a few months now, pretty good service and easy to use and implement. Best thing is, since it is distributed, for a Global audience (in our case) gets faster DNS resolution, in comparison to own hosted DNS servers. Additionally, it just off loads another security liability off network/server.
