dma disabled in windows xp

hello:

I have k8nsc939 mobd with dma enabled.

however when I look at the ide primary channel properites under windows xp
it always says that the current setting is PIO mode even though "DMA when avaialbale" is selected. my bios claimns dma is enabled.

what is wrong with this picture?

I am gettting spurious crashes and my suspicion is this may be causing the problem.

any thoughts will be appreciated
