I'm setting up a small network for a business and I was wanting to put in a DLT drive so they could backup their server in the evenings.

I've been all over Ebay looking for a nice one, and they really probably wont have much more than 10-15 gig of data out on their server at one time. So I'm looking for some suggestions on good, solid and reliable DLT drives. Needs to be an External as the server is just a tower PC and most DLT's don't look like they'll fit in a desktop.

The only bad thing about DLT's, is price that I've seen so far. Thanks for any input :)

QHalo,

Look for a Quantum DLT 4000 drive. Very good drive, with multiple compression settings, supporting up to 40 gig writes. You should use either Type III or IV tapes. Quantum has newer drives, DLT 7000 & 8000, but you should be able to find a 4000 at a good price. Remember to take care of the drive tape heads, get a good cleaning tape, and use it whenever the cleaning lights flash.

Good luck,

Here's the three I would look at:

DLT 2000/IIIXTs (15 native, 30 compressed)
DLT 4000 (20 native, 40 compressed)
DLT 7000 (35 native, 70 compressed)

Bear in mind that you'll probably get at best around 150% of the native capacity. I've owned lots of tape drives of all sorts and never seen a 2:1 compression unless I was backing up text files or something. DLT2000s can be had for a song on e-bay ($30-$50 at most), DLT4000s run around $100, and DLT7000s go for $200-$300. I'll warn you that media and cleaning tapes can be kind of expensive. DLT IV media and DLTIIIxt media runs about $35/cartridge new, with cleaning tapes running about the same. I've been semi-burned once on ebay with a DLT7000 that needed a new head (cleaning tape would clear 'use cleaning tape' light until the next tape went in) and the repair cost me around ~$200. The 7000s seem more finicky than the 2000s (I have 2, the never seem to need cleaning) or the 4000s (again, I've cleaned it maybe twice) in general.

You might want to investigate DDS-3 DATs as well (12 native, 24 compressed -so 16-18GB). They are more expensive that the DLT4000s, but the media is dirt cheap. It might be a better solution than DLT.
