Hello,

I've googled it, but to no avail. Does anyone know how to make your own USB hub? I've got a decent ammount of electronics back ground, but nothing digital.

I've got parts galore, and old usb expansion cards, etc.

Help please?

Thankyou

Hello,

Buy one for $30 and use the time you saved to observe the bright star.

the main problme would be finding the USB chip thats in them. Just buy one like everyone else has said.

Hack-a-day is a daily requirement. I have it RSS feed to my personalized google homepage.

Anyway, google -usb hub schematic- and you will have more luck. It looks like they use some type of controller. Don't buy one. Do it. Take pics. And post them here.

Finding the hub controller chip is no problem at all. Just get one of these(or similar). It comes in a QFP(as I'm sure most of the hub controller chips you'll find will be), so you'll have some surface mount soldering to do. Typical application schematics are in the datasheet. Get one of those, a regulator, and oscillator, some discrete components and all the connectors and you're in business. Definitely cheaper and easier to just buy one, but building your own is more fun(if you're into that sort of thing).

ps. forgot to mention a site I found. The following site has a list of different USB chips from different manufacturers, which might be useful for figuring out what you can use. http://www.lvr.com/usbchips.htm

edit: Finally post 6000 for me! :D
