Hello,
I have a DIY router that has been in use for about a year and has gone through 2 flash drives, each lasted about 6 months, first was a Sandisk Cruzer 16gb, second was an Adata 32gb both usb 2.0.
Specs of this router are:
Core 2 duo e6300 1.86ghz dual core
Intel DQ45EK mini itx board
2gb of HP ddr2 (don't remember speed)
160w PSU (integrated in an IN Win itx case)
The Sandisk said it detected an error and turned itself to read only (apparently a common problem with Cruzers that are fine so I chalked it up to that).
When the Cruzer failed I was running Untangle.
I then switched to PFsense to try it because it was recommended by a friend, even though Untangle worked very well and was quite turnkey.
PFsense worked well on the Adata flash drive for about 4 and a half months, then I added Snort, an IP filtering program and a couple other UTM things, turned to log only and no blocking, with relatively small logs, I also read that pfsense writes logs to a RAMdisk.
About a month later, the the dhcp server stopped working and when I would reboot it, numerous read and write errors were displayed, but the OS was partially loaded.
I don't know if the added programs were the reason or just coincidence and that the flash drive would fail anyways.
So I am assuming that the flash drive turned to read only also, but I haven't looked into it much because I haven't had much time (full time student plus work).
I would just buy another flash drive if I knew it would fix the issue, but I don't want to dump money into it if it will break again.
I've also read about people having bad luck with DIY routers and spinning drives.
I also assume that if a flash drive is burned up from too many writes, a MLC ssd would also burn up.
SLC ssd's seems to be the best option but they cost a lot, even though I would only need an 8gb and the cheapest one I saw on ebay was $32 for either pci-e 1x or sata.
I have done some reading on here, and there are people that are getting 2-3 years or more out of flash drives on any number of router OS's.
So what am I doing wrong?
Any suggestions are welcome.
