Hello,
I'm interested in a NAS media server than can transcode and stream to my Xbox One. The Xbox One seems to have issues with some video / audio formats so I'd like to have the NAS media server than will transcode and play all video formats.


I've read a little on Synology NAS units such as a DS216play (~$275) however I'm not sure however powerful they are. I basically just want to steam a movie hear and there or setup an FTP server to share files now and then.


What would I need to DIY a NAS media server like Synology? Could I do it cheaper than a DS216play at $275? What software would I need?

If you want to do it for 275 or less and need to buy aprts just buy a synology and be done.

Most people DIY because they want MORE power, more capacity and doing that DIY is for sure cheaper than comparable synolgoy but for <275 you may as well just get a synology... you cuold still DIY it's just a lot more work for something that's likely marginally better, more headache, more time.

Would a Synology DS216play be OK to stream/transcode an occasional movie to the Xbox or access files on the go?
 
actually the QNAP TS-251-US with a Celeron cpu and 1gb RAM looks to be more powerful.
 
For $275 it is doable to make a diy box. You could run freeNAS with plex; that's free. Intel pentium/i3 or Amd A series, 4gb or 8gb.
 
I actually picked up the QNAP TS-251-US for $244.29 from Jet.com!


I has an Intel Celeron 2.4ghz dual core and 1gb ram. I'll probably add more memory for cheap if needed. It also has an HDMI out so I can play directly to my TV. My XBOX One wont even be needed.

This. DIY is either for control, power, capacity, third gen file systems, or expandability.

You can't get prebuilts that meet the above requirements without spending out the butt.

Its all about what you really want. How many devices, size, resilience, and so on. If you give more info on what you want to accomplish we can give better advice.
 
I'm going to say that Dell T20 fits that bill and it's cheaper ;-)

If you already have a case then you can build one for under $100 if go with the second hand market. That's obviously without storage, but I would suggest getting a cheap and small SSD to help with reboots and keeping your OS off of the storage drives.

$100 can get you a system that can transcode at least one 1080p stream.
