So long story short, I have a budget system that I put togeather for my wife. I just picked up a 4870x2 which has 1x 6 pin & 1x 8 pin PCIE connector. The PSU only has 2x 6 pin. I have a couple of other 8 pin (or rather 6+2 pin) cables that are not being used that came with my Seasonic X750 (these are custom individually sleeved so they are in addition to what came with my PSU, but they are too short for use in any full sized system).

So I want to get this up & going tonight before she gets home from work so I went looking for a DIY 6 pin to 8 pin adapter & I came across this guide.

I was wondering if anyone had ever tried this. The 4870x2 is on there tested as working list & it will take all of about 30 seconds worth of work to make this happen with what I have here so if it works its a great workaround.

Keep in mind you don't have to have the 8 pin connector just to get the card working. You can use a 6pin, you just won't get the overdrive overclocking.

really.. I googled around & thought everything said you ahd to have 8 pin.

I actually plan on underclocking the thing. The only thing she will be playing is Diablo 3 and currently it will be at 1600x1200 so a 4870x2 is way overkill. A single 4850 would have worked fine, but I couldnt find anything slower then this on CL. Plus I got it at a good price.

ok well I did the little connection like the walk through showed. its up & running, though now I cant get a god damn driver to install.. CCC BSOD's in the detecting hardware step..

Try the installation in safe mode. That might help. I'll try not to mention the pink elephant standing in the middle of the room (a CraigsList item for a good price).

BSOD is the driver package.. it also happens when I choose uninstall. Has nothing to do with the card itself.
