Right now I have a pair of 2.1 Altec Lansing FX-6021 speakers, which I like very very much. I mostly use them for music, with a bit of movie and gaming on the side. I've been thinking of getting a 5.1 system but the available options don't excite me very much. The low end creative offerings sound crap, and the high end logitech (z-5500) and klipschs are out of my reach at the moment.

So a solution I came up with is to 'build' my own surround system, buy buying another pair of 2.1 or 2.0 speakers and possibly a centre channel speaker, and hooking them up to my sound card outputs - front/rear/centre.

How would this setup work out?

I've done a 4.2 myself in the past with 2 x 2.1 promedias. It did work just fine, but I found adjusting the control pods for each set to be a pain. I think if you want 5.2, you'd have to find a 3.1 multimedia system within your reach somewhere, if such a thing exists, and I'm pretty sure they don't.

I also don't think it's possible to get another 2.1 and a seperate center without having to buy amplification for just the center channel. This might be pricey, but I'm sure some people will chime in and suggest a T-amp for this route.

4.2: Easy - get another 2.1.
5.2: Harder - get another 2.1, center channel, and amplifier (T-amp maybe?) for the center.

I can make it easier than that, get a single 5.1 system, remove the rear surrounds and get another 2.1 for the rear surround.

Well if you read the OP's statement about 5.1 systems, that's not really an option.

yeh, the whole idea of throwing together random sets of bundled speakers sounds fairly half baked though. I would actually suggest just waiting until he can afford a full klipsch set or a reciever and speakers if quality is what he wants.

I had 3 sets at one time of the every first Klipsch Promedia's. They didn't have the microphone port and stuff on the volume box. I bought them all when they very first came out.
So i had 4.1 x 3, or 12.3 off a SB Live 4.1.
If my A/C in the house was on energy saver, the subs weren't as loud.

It wasn't worth it though. Klipsch computer audio sucks, they used like 2" midrange or 3" midrange drivers.....
I switched to home audio.....now my midbass speakers are larger then Klipsch ProMedia subs.
