is there a difference between the video quality of divx and xvid? which one has better quality or are they the same?
 
Yes, there is a difference. xvid has better picture quality at the same bitrate compared to divx6. The downside is that xvid takes a bit longer to encode than divx. xvid is also free and open source, while divx6 pro costs $$$.

Literally everyone encodes into XVID. DIVX is rarer. XVID provides better quality and manageable size as opposed to DIVX.
