i bought a new DVD burner to store my many divx files and to play them. can divx files play on the regular tv DVD player? or can i convert them to another file type?
If you have an old DVD player it probably cant play Divx. But many newer models can.
It should tell you in the users manual of your model. What model DVD player do you have?
If your model doesnt play Divx, there are lots of programs that will convert it to a format your DVD player will understand, like VSO DivXtoDVD or AVI2DVD, etc, just do a google.
But converting takes time and can be aggravating. Since you have a lot of Divx files to burn you may want to buy a Divx/DVD player and then you can put several Divx files on one DVD disc.
I'm a friend of his, and he said his intentions are for archiving and giving out to friends. Since many DVD Players will be involved here, you might want to tell him how to convert his movie files so they work on older boxes/game systems. I am uninitiated in the video codec world, otherwise I would have told him myself.
You are best off transcoding the files to an MPEG format of some sort, as that is much more likely to be supported by a set top DVD player, rather than files encoded using DivX.
This is a gentle reminder that we are not in the piracy business. While I cannot be 100% sure that piracy is going on here, and there are legitimate purposes for wanting to know how to play DivX files on a set top DVD player, I am also not 100% sure that what is going on here is entirely legitimate. If these files are owned by the member and/or are not copyrighted, then proceed. However, if they are copyrighted, this discussion needs to come to a halt immediately.
