Ditching the 3500+ Going with P4

What is a solid combination for P4 systems? I'm looking at systems in the upwards of 3.4's

My current system is in the sig below and I can't deal with the memory incompatibility issues with the 939 chips. I have 2 days to return this proc and no easy access to the types of memory that are said to be better suited for the setup. I'm returning my proc and mobo (maybe the memory, depending what kind of feedback I get from people).

Time to go for a P4. I have never had a pentium, but everyone I know personally has one and loves it. This go around it's gonna have to go to the pentium guys. My main question is this: Are there any incompatibilty issues with the memory I have in my sig on my first system? The XMS TwinX 3200XL super low latency stuff?

Are certain chips more friendly to this memory than others? Does anyone have any first hand experience with this memory and pentium systems?

It's kind of up in the air on what I am going to get, probably depends on availablity (I like to buy locally as opposed to online) and what you [H]s have to say about it. I have stepped into the Intel door, now I need someone to help me figure out what hall to walk down. I want to stay with a 478 socket set by the way, I'm very timid about going with the newest latest stuff after the experience I've had with this AMD. If your wondering what I've been through, just search my posts. It's ugly.

Anyways, thatnks in advance for your help. I know I can trust the info I get here :D

Well on a P4 the memory is not affected by the CPU because the memory controller is on the northbridge, not on the CPU. (A64 the memory controller is on the CPU)

So get a 875/865 chipset for a socket 478 or a 915/925 for LGA775.

I would recommend a 915 chipset for you as you want 3.4GHZ + and LGA775 is where everything is going. (925 chipset is the high end one, but it is DDR2 only so you would need new ram)

Say this motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-127-182&depa=0
And this CPU: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-182&depa=0

I'm sorry to hear that you are having 3500 problems. What mobo are you having problems with, the Abit version 1 board?

If you will NOT be overclocking, the Intel D875PBZLK (can take the EE CPU edition) should suffice. If you WILL be overclocking, then the ASUS P4C800E Deluxe may be the best bet.

Besides o'c'ing and not o'c'ing, the Intel mobo should always work with MS software as they will be using 100% Intel drivers and chipsets. Unfortunately you cannot RAID 0 with PATA devices, only SATA devices. But at least you should not have HighPoint or Promise controller "problems".

In the coming months a 3.4C may be as hard to get as hen's teeth.

v1.1 on the abit

I might toy around with OCing, but my priority is to have a system that is stable at stock cpu AND memory speeds. My memory is rated 2/2/2/5 and I'd like it to run at those speeds.

I've spent almost 2 weeks trying to find the magic timings and settings to get my 3500 to run and it just wasn't panning out.

As far as this memory goes, looks like there are only a few boards that liked it. Can you recommend a specific board that would work well with this corsair memory? I'm defnintely going with the 478 socket, I don't want to upgrade to ddr 2 or pci-e.

As far as upgrade paths go, I would be buying the whole shabang next time anyways. As long as this thing can get the job done for a couple years, I'm a happy camper. Anyone else?

Thanks for the links by the way. :D

Do note that with the MB I linked to, you can't use AGP video cards, as it is PCI-Express..

If you are more inclined to use a AGP video card, a 875/865 chipset would be better like wallijonn suggested.

you do realize that the only intel chip that can compete with your current system is maybe the 3.4ee. i know this is the intel forum and im an intel guy and all but whats so bad about the a64 3500 that you want to get rid of if?

Do a search on my previous threads. I have been through alot of trouble with this system trying to keep it stable while gaming. I have used different memory/mobo/vid card/powersupply.... The only thing I have not tried is a different processor and they are nowhere to be found atm.

These A64 939 pins procs are picky with memory, and I don't feel like playing the memory roulette game with this damn thing.

If someone has a magic cure for my current setup, I'm more than happy to go for it, but I've been through so much frustration, and my return period for this proc is up in a couple days, I feel that I should just give up on it.

you sure its the cpu/mobo. ive got the same ram, board and proc and its stable as hell. hove you ran memtest, and prime 95? the 939 procs are actually very good with ram compared to the 754 ones.

Not that I've seen. I have prime 95'd it and it fails. When I first got the memory I ran memtest for about 8 hours with no errors. (on an a7n8x board)

If there is a hardware problem, it lies in the cpu, it's the only possible one... I've switched out every other single piece of hardware possible.

The problem is that I can't just walk down to frys and change it out, there are no more

If I have to wait for an RMA, then my return period on my memory runs out.... by the way.

that is a tough choice to make. have you ran memtest on the a64 setup? sounds like a bad cpu. i take it your temps are ok.

if you do go intel, i loved my 2.6c i had running at 3 gig. and can heartiuly reccomend the ic7 max3 board from abit.

i take it you ran memtest86?

Sounds to me like it may be a faulty memory controller on the chip. I would be patient and RMA it amd for a new one.
