I have a question.

I do a lot of video encoding, and process bogs down my computer a lot, and sometimes drives me insane because I can't do much besies surfing and msn on it while it encodes/transcodes video. :p

I was wondering if there was a Windows XP program out there than can take advantage of spare CPU cycles of other computers on a LAN. My brothers have computers that they don't use as often as me, and adding their power to mine would triple my encoding speed/capability.

So is this possible or am I just dreaming of a too-simple-to-be-true solution?

Sounds like you need a dual core computer.
 
lol, yup. I was thinking of going with an X2 as my next big upgrade (if I even end up getting an upgrade). Right now I'm on an AMD Athlon XP 2600+.
 
Borg your bro's rig? for team 33 of course... Oh I just noticed that I'm off topic... Well nonetheless I sometimes wish that were possible. U do need a X2 soon... Fold for team 33 regardless :)

 
The program would have to be able to divide up work and send it out to the individual computers for processing.

Unless the stuff you work with is specifically designed for being used in clusters...but it doesn't sound like it. ;)

At first, I thought you meant borging computers at a LAN party. I was going to say, "I don't think that's very legal..but it'd be awesome".
 
i think cluster encoding is soley based on the encoding software....you can always set the other computer to do nuthin but encode and save your work on a network share.
 
That's what I was thinking... just dividing the video segments that need encoding and giving one to each comp (mine and 2 of my bros' comps) and then rejoining them later. Thing is I wanted something simple where I could easily manage it all from my comp in one step and stuff. :p What?! So I'm lazy, sue me. :p
 
VNC FTW :) or remote desktop if all systems have XP (its built in)
 
Vegas Video 6 has a "Network render mode" where you can use other cpu's on your lan to help transcode, you can even have the work soley done by the other cpu's and have your main rig completly free. The software is kinda expensive tho, and a bit tricky to set up, but it is the only thing I know of that will do what you want.
