Distorted graphics due to overheating?

is this normal? this is my quick diagram of what my 9600 Pro looks like. notice how the green (only in the diagram) thermal grease is in one blob, it is not spread out over the GPU. would this mean my HSF isn't taking much heat from my GPU?

the thermal grease is on the core of the G/VPU. Thats the only place it needs to be.
 
That is exactly the way it should be.

Just needs to cover the "black" core part of the GPU... the rest of the "chip" is just packaging, and doesn't generate any heat.
