distilled water?

So distilled water does not conduct electrisity right? if so would it be possible to do a sort of fish tank computer setup with distilled water or does it get contaminated too easily?

no its not plausible....it gets contaminated way too easily. The best thing would be mineral oil but that will make you components all yucky
 
Distilled water DOES conduct electricity, it's just basically boiled to get rid of the little swimmy things that will start to grow in your loop

no it doesnt....distilled water has no electrolytes there for it does not conduct electricity....but it can easily regain those electrolytes through contamination (say a tea spoon of dust)
 
Ok, well go fill up your bathtub with distilled water, cut the end off an extention cord, plug it in and drop in the bathtub while you're standing in it. Then tell me distilled water isn't conductive.....I'm not taking the chance that there's no contaminants inside any of my components to say it won't become conductive.

ABSOLUTELTY pure distilled water will not conduct electricity, but keeping it pure and from re-ioninzing is another story.

It will contaminate immediately - do you really think ur bath tub is THAT clean? In clean conditions, like in a surgery room or better, dust-free zones (like where they make semiconductors) will provide an environment good enough to test this theory. But such ideal conditions are not possible at anyones home. :p

OK, who here has a "clean, lab type environment" in their home. To assume that the water will stay pure is a big oversight.

I guess we're trying to argue the same point.....but as a generalization, the water will get dirty and become unusable as a "non conductor".

yea but you still originally said it "DOES" conduct...SO :p
 
Right. 100% pure H2O is only nonconductive in theory. In real world, that's not the case.
 
Yeah...you win :D I should've explained more first.

So back to the OP: Pure distilled water does not conduct electricity.
But once it's exposed to contaminents like dust, dirt, air, etc (everyday use) it's just like regular h20.

Didn't mean to cause any arguments, I just didn't want someone to think they can drop their case in a tank full off distilled water and think they've got the best water cooled pc ever :D

well lets get back to his original question. It wasn't about if distilled water was conductive, it was about, "Can you use water from a fish tank that has fish in it?" At least I think that's what he was getting at.

The answer is no. It would get tons of fish crap and whatever else they leave behind in your loop. Although a long time ago when water cooling first came out, I did see someone do this. And I'm sure it could be done with tons of filtering.... But overall, it would look pretty sweet to have fish swiming around in your computer, but not that practicle.

Just to add on to the off topic subject, I'm not sure if it would ever be possible to have fish in a WC setup, unless you were using an enormous fish tank. Fish can't survive 32C water. Not to mention there would be immediate corrosion of anything metal in the loop.

On topic, submersing the computer in an inert fluid would work. But finding ways to circulate the fluid may be a problem.

he meant use a fishtank to submerge it in NOT a tank with actual fish in it

Ok, I did a little google search, and came across this little experiment I vaguely remember doing in 5th-6th grade 25 or so yrs ago.

And I do recall the fish tank case mod from a few yrs ago, but I think the guy had a bigger case, and plexi-ed the top half off and make it a fish tank....nothing to do with a water cooling loop.
 
I had the same idea as the OP in this thread. Not sure he means to submerge his setup in the fish-tank. Rather use it as a very large reservoir, with a huge surface area for heat dissipation, and being a massive body of water to start with, it would take a long time for temps to start to rise. Using distilled water, with a healthy dose of anti corrosion additive, and keeping the tank covered (with no fish or contaminants in it) it will work yes. Not sure whether you would need a rad in the loop or not tho.
As for the conductivity of distilled water... it has been answered already :p

It'd still be the best computer mod ever if you had living fish...... My next mod just might had an enclosed case in a fish tank with fish and had my tubes just run through the fish water..... This thread has actually got me thinking....
 
distilled water, or even double distilled water can conduct electricity. the conductivity is incredibly low (pharmaceutical grade water has a conductivity of 0.5-1.1uS/cm) but this would be enough to short out a motherboard.

(i tested pharmaceutical grade water all summer long for conductivity, as well as bioburden, TOC, etc.)

So basically is what your saying is contaminated distilled water is conductive, DISTILLED water is not....

Wow, couldnt have said it better myself.

Distilled water may be non-conductive right when it's bottled, but it WILL NOT stay that way very long, regardless of how clean it is kept.

that was assumed but not the original argument...the fact remains that distilled water does not conduct, once it becomes contaminated it is no longer distilled water
 
did nobody read my post?

distilled water, even distilled water passed through reverse osmosis filters and UV destruction units, still conducts.

If this thread was more of a civilized discussion and less of a fight over high-school science semantics, it wouldn't be so irritating.

NO, IT IS NOT POSSIBLE - YES, IT GETS CONTAMINATED TOO EASILY
