I got this PSU as a result of reading all the praise on this forum...I guess its a nice PSU.
But like other people have experienced mine has a very high pitched faint electrical noise...is there any way to fix this other than RMA'in? thats such a pain in the arse. windows reads all the rails lower than what they should be also...even though I have not done a true test with multimeter...I guess the rails are alright they are stable enough.

Other than that, its a great PSU...Im torn between just returning this one and tryin an Epower since thats what we sell at our computer shop and those work awesome in all the systems we build...or exchange it with a new Xclio at newegg....hrm...
 
Transformer whine is that much of a disappointment? Wow. :( I must have low standards. ;)

What are these "lower than what they should be voltages?"

the lower than what they should be voltages are read as 11.97v 4.90v and 3.26v in speedfan from within windows and the bios also shows the same.
are these ok?

only if I can get rid of the whining I would be happy...even the crappy stock 430watt aspire psu didnt do that...
 
Well, certainly that 12V doesn't look bad. But the 3.3V and 5V look pretty low.

Usually transformer whine is barely audible and only during high loads, so typically it's tolerable.

What's your build? Maybe that's part of the problem. A crossload?

The spec is +/-5%.
 
Rule # 1 - Never...repeat...NEVER trust voltage readings from software. Use a meter for such measurements to be sure.

The only time I've ever heard any transformer whine from my PSU's was when they were under HEAVY load. I assume you're not trying to run an X2 quad-SLI system with a raid 5 array on a 330w psu :p

I have no experience with Xclio...so I dunno if that's just a "trait" they have or not. The last PSU I had that whined was an OLD 330w (I'm talkin' 7+ years) generic.
 
I'm thinking crossload. Like an old Socket A on a dual rail PSU. ;)

its a new system and like I said the crappy 420watt that aspire has in the QPack did not make noise and I was overclocked on everything just the same.

and yes I know about the software readouts...I just wanted to I dont know get some opinions.
this PSU whines slightly even when the system is idle and when its not even OC'd

some people have experienced the same with this PSU on this board, but those peole I guess had unbearable whines coming from the PSU and got it rma'd...is there any way to minimize the whining without replacing it?

Maybe just bad. Shouldn't be whining with that load on it.

I have a xclio 450bl and its great powers everything. I still am thinking of upgrading when i get my new watercooled setup. Just so I can have more power!
 
well its constant most of the time...but every Id say like 10mins it goes silent for 5 seconds and then comes back..for another 10mins. this is the only variance otherwise pitch and loudness remain the same. It is very faint...kinda like...I know many people cant hear a TV thats "off" but really on...the high pitch squeel that comes out of it...its beyond most peoples hearing range. Because the average person has around 12khz max hearing(yes I know technically we can hear up to 20khz) ... anything above that most people are deaf too or can hear but cant "sense" it. cuz their hearing being damaged and such from daily lives...anyways..
my point is TV's are around 10khz the whine they put out and many people cannot hear that. I on the other hand can hear a TV on if its not even in my room simply by that high pitch noise carrying throughout the whole house. Well, thats exactly how this PSU's whine sounds. Its a little higher pitch and much more faint than a TV's but it is there nonetheless.
 
The flyback transformer in a television set whines at just over 15 kilohertz.

No software is capable of reading a voltage; it's done in hardware, then reported back to the machine through an I/O port. By then, it's not a voltage -- it's just a number.

A reading from a multimeter is only worth a damn if you're using a good meter. There are craptacular meters (like the ones people buy at Home Depot for $20) that have accuracy only a little better than the on-board voltage sensor.


The voltages you've reported are well within tolerance:

11.97v = -0.25%
4.90v = -2.0%
3.26v = -1.2%

You're going to have to buy a pretty nice meter to find one that won't have an error larger than the difference you intend to measure.
 
An Oscope would be even better, but... well... you know how that goes.

ok 15khz....makes more sense that most people cant hear it...=) I just took a frequency analyzer up to one once and it was around 10khz...guess it was a weird TV.

Or a broken spectrum analyzer.

There's 525 lines in a frame (though only 480 are visible -- the rest are in the vertical blanking interval). They're interlaced, so 262.5 lines per frame at 60 interlaced frames per second gives a horizontal scan rate of 15,750 hertz.

my xclio 430 watt doesn't whine. It allowed a higher stable overclock by about 200 mhz on my p4 as compared to my previous 400 watt high quality name brand power supply.

I've got nothing but good things to say about xclio and this is the first negative review (albiet not that negative) that I've ever seen on this brand PSU. You can't even find negative reviewws on google. I'd say RMA it and get another one. The Xclio is rock solid.

Magnetism has neat properties rleated to electronics that help convert voltage levels and manage current.

Switching power supplies, like we use in computer PSUs, use electromagnetics. The main transformer is a big electromagnet, and the chokes are electromagnets.

When the current through a coil changes, the magnetic field around the coil changes. That can cause anything magnetic in, around, or near the coil to be influenced by the magnetism. "Influenced" means that it might move or wiggle or change shape -- a force is acting on it.

The most common cause for a coil to make noise is that it isn't packed correctly. If the magnetic field is coming and going, and the wires in the coil aren't laying tightly against eachother, they'll have room to move. When they move and bump against eachother, they'll make noise. Loose plates in the core of the coil, bad casing, an extra bit of ferrous material from the core floating around under the coil layers -- all these things can be the source of vibration in electromagnetic parts.

There's other things that might be happening in your power supply to make noise, but that's what I figure is the most likely. (Without even having heard the noise or looked at your power supply.)

Incomplete varnishing of transformers/inductors is quite often the cause of dancing winding's.

there is one review on newegg...customer got this PSU and it whined really bad for him. at least, I think it was this psu the review was on =)
 
No I dont have any whine out of mine. I think it might be the bottleneck of my o/c though. I am going to get something bigger to test my theory.
 
well the whine has gotten worse...I guess Im gonna need to RMA after all. now it gets louder of a whine when playing games (when under load). But, when I go back to desktop and go idle...the old whine returns which is the barely audible one. Actually now it seems quieter than before when its idling. Just in games I know the whine has gotten a lot...lot worse. Also worse when I do put load on it in normal windows its the new amplified whine.
 
I have the x14 500w and I don't have any whining...


when its on.

when I turn off the computer it starts to whine until I flip the switch off then back on in the back.

Doesn't bother me much though. Good PSU's if you ask me!
 
EDIT POST ABOVE --- My Xclio died after 1 year. It stopped supporting my overclock and the 12 volt voltage rail became iffy.

how are other Xclio's running?
