I am working on a friends system and it has a problem of turning off the display after it loads into WinXP.
the motherboard is MSI K8M890M2-V
it has onboard video and no other video cards installed.
what could cause this?

the display says out of range when it happens.
does that mean it was set for a higher resolution before being connected to this monitor which cant display the higher settings?
safe mode works.

Most likely.

It could be the resolution too high for the monitor or the refresh rate not correct/not supported for the current resolution for the monitor.
Most LCD run at 60Hz refresh rate.

While booted into Safe Mode and use an admin priv account to log in.
run msconfig command and set boot.ini to use basevideo - reboot.

Once the computer boots in normal you may see messages about video not being
optimal and do you want Windows to change to optimal values ... allow it to do so.

Run msconfig again and uncheck the basevideo option...reboot again.

Should be good from this point on.
