Display Resolution / scaling help

Hi, I didn't know whether to put this in Displays, windows, or here, but this seems like the logical choice.

I recently switched monitors (from a 5:4 1280x1024 display to a 16:9 1440x900). Also, after doing this I upgraded my video drivers since I hadn't in a few months. Running an nvidia geforce 250gtx on the latest drivers as of last week.

My problem, as you can see from the screenshots is that while my display is native 1440x900, one section of the Nvidia control panel thinks my native is 1280x1024, and the other doesn't. This hasn't caused any real problems, but is annoying.

My bigger problem is, after switching drivers, it won't save my scaling options. When I change it to "Do not scale" and hit apply/ok, screen flashes, it asks If I'd like to save those settings, then it just shows "use my displays built in scaling' again. Before, while this would appear unchanged, my games would still respect the setting I chose. Now I can't get games to not scale at all, which results in ugly stretched graphics in Diablo etc.

For reference, when removing old drivers, I did use driver sweeper, and also told Nvidia installer to remove old settings.

Perhaps a relic of the old monitor driver that needs to be removed?

I see you are using DVI now, but was the old monitor VGA?
 
nope, both DVI.

Actually, I never install drivers for the monitor, usually let Windows download it or use a default one. The funny thing is I've switched these 2 monitors out in the past with no issues :( I'll try 'updating' or rolling back the driver or something.
 
Fixed scaling issue by switching refresh rate to 60hz from 75hz. Don't know why It was on 75hz anyway, both monitors were LCD. Do LCD's benefit from 75hz? Native res issue still there though.

They dont benefit nearly as much as CRT's do.120Hz LCD's can be 3d capable, 60Hz for each eye.

As far as the resolution surely it isnt getting that from the monitor through DDC, so it has to be something in windows. Perhaps if you booted into safe mode and removed all monitors from the device manager?

When I booted safe mode, there was no monitor entry in Device manager. It's there in normal mode though, with the correct driver listed.
