display problems...

wasnt sure if i should put this under video cards/display or just general hardware but here she'll sit lol :D anyways... my parents have had problems with their Pc lately...(im in iowa and they're in cali so trying to figure out every angle it could be) they just got a new monitor... worked great for two days... then nada... my sister upped the resolution & added a background then no video... monitor goes into "power save".. so my younger brother takes back this monitor since they think its bad and returns with a new one.. yet again.. works fine.. except this time she only adds a background and same thing again.. they've got a generic pc with built in video.. could this be the onboard video is shot... or something over heating... i got a cheapie video card for them on the way soon but could it be there Mobo might be takin a dump? ahhh i dunno.. i figured if anyone may have an answer to this it'd be here.. any help would be greatly appreciated.. thanks for lookin!, Grainz
 
Check and make sure that the refresh rate isn't being turned up over the limit for the monitor. I used to have an old monitor that when yoo turned the refresh rate up over 50ish, it would black out, and the only way to reset it was to plug in a different monitor, turn down the refresh rate, and plug the old one back in. Sometimes the refresh rate will automatically change w/ the resolution change. Thats my two cents, anyway.
