Display problems with x1950pro

Well, my x1950pro and or cat 6.12 drivers are giving me problems with my monitor. Durring the whole fiasco with my bad 6800GT, I decided to switch from my good 17inch crt to a shitty one to see if my monitor was giving me problems. As far as I can tell the problem wasnt the monitor.

Back to the point. I switched back to my better (also older) compaq mv740 monitor. Well when rebooting I could see the windows xp pro screen but after, my screen goes into standby mode. When I goto safe mode it works fine, and when I removed the the cat 6.12 drivers I could go back into windows normaly. Reinstalling 6.12s did nothing to correct the problem as did installing 6.11's.

The only way I can get display with the drivers installed on this monitor is to unplug the video cable from the card before hitting the windows screen, then plugging it back in at login.

Also in the driver panel, it says my monitor is capable of 1080i but im not sure whats with that.

Simpson: in your sig you mention an nforce4 chipset so maybe you should try the hotfix. If you try the hotfix please be sure to let me know if it worked for you or not because I have the same problem on an nforce2 chipset.

What follows are excerpts from my open ticket with ATI.

I bought the visiontek x1950 pro video card a week ago. Here are excerpts from my trouble ticket with ATI. Visiontek hasn't responded to the two tickets I opened with them and ATI has just been sending me links to faqs that I have already read (or with generic advice like disable your onboard sound, etc.) and they would know as much if they actually bothered to read through my ticket and attached system diagnostic .txt file

Summary: Black Screen during boot at welcome screen
Details: Windows boots to a black sceen at the Windows XP welcome menu. I have the latest bios (version 19) and latest motherboard drivers (nforce2 version 5.10). This occurs with the Visiontek x1950 pro AGP video card.

Steps to recreate the problem: *

Install the ATI drivers version 6.11 or 6.12. When the system reboots the screen will turn black after the windows xp loading "sideways ticker" is displayed when the "welcome" choose a profile screen should be displayed on the screen (This is when the video driver is loaded). Reseting the computer to boot again does nothing to remedy problem nor does changing any bios settings as recommended in the ATI knowledge base.

My motherboard does not have onboard video. It is (Abit An7) the last and best socket A motherboard made by Abit. I have the latest drivers installed.

My power supply is not the problem. It is an Antec true 480 and my previous video card was a Nvidia 6800 ultra which uses about the same amount of energy that the x1950 does.

I do not have any other cards plugged into my system.

I have the latest MB bios installed.

I have tried each port on the video card with the DVI to VGA adapter with my CRT monitor.

Please Advise.

Although I am not an expert, I suspect that the problem is related to memory addresses that the x1950 agp video drivers want to use but the chipset is already using them. I can boot into VGA mode but as soon as I change a display setting the monitor goes black.

I know that there is a hotfix for Nforce4 motherboards. Will there be a hotfix for Nforce2 motherboards?

I wonder if the x1950 agp been tested on the nforce2 chipset? There are still many people who own these chipsets because it was the most popular and best socket A chipset. Boy are these customers going to be surprised when they learn that the x1950 pro doesn't work with their motherboard.
