I have an Acer X223w (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/product/500/UV/539721.jpg) that I'm thinking of painting white (from black). Keep in mind that I have no real experience with spray paint.

The finish on the display is matte and slightly textured. I know I need to sand and I figure I can use any one of a number of plastic painting guides to help me through this process. What I'm asking for here is any specific "gotcha" type information that you guys might have in regards to painting a display. I have way too many hours of laptop repair behind me so taking the display apart shouldn't pose much of a problem.

Are there heat issues with paint (not that it gets hot)? Do I *need* to use clear-coat (I'm not positive I want a gloss finish)? Is there a paint that will give me a high quality, egg-shell type finish? Maybe a texture/sheen like the casing already has but white.

Any pointers or input would be appreciated. Also, how long should my display be out of commision? I've read laptop painting guides and they talk about damage from putting their laptop in a bag before it's been allowed to dry for 6 weeks. Is this something I need to consider when painting a display that wont' really be touched at all?

Egg shell I would assume you'd want an enamel type paint for. I wouldn't worry to much about the heat factor, any decent spray paint should be able to hold up to 100F or so degrees on the exhaust vents.

To paint a plastic monitor...

Just take it apart,

Sand the entire thing with ~300g sand paper,

Spray with white krylon fusion paint.

This goes on runny, so very light coats are an absolute must. Expect 20 coats (each covering about 5% of the total area) to cover black.

Then, after waiting 3 days, hit it with a thick coat (about 5x thicker than each coat of the white krylon paint) of krylon "triple thick" clear coat. Any high gloss clear coat will work, but the triple thick literally looks like glass on top of your paint :)

If you want an eggshell type topcoat, well... use a semigloss coat. Of your choice, but none by Krylon (that I know of...).

With a display, so long as you wait 3 days before clear coating, and it's in open air, you'll be fine. Just be very careful with it for about 6 months afterwards (yeah, I realize this is a long fucking time, but it shouldn't be too hard to manage with a display...)
