Display Mirroring, would this work?

Ok, here's my situation. My PC is currently in my den, along with my TV. I've contemplated hooking my PC up to my TV permanently, but there are some situations where I would much rather be sitting at a desk versus sitting on the couch. That being said, there are other times (most PC games) where I'd rather be playing on the big screen TV.

My question is this... Could I hook my current monitor up to my PC using the DVI port, and then run an HDMI cable to my TV and hook that up to the PC using the HDMI port. I don't need a dual monitor setup, so I would want to just mirror the desktop on both displays. Then, when I want to play from the couch I can turn the TV on and my monitor off, and when I want to sit at my desk I can just leave the TV off. I feel like technically this would work, the only thing I'm not sure about is how games would handle it. Would they run slower due to the mirrored desktop setup? Are there any other problems I'm missing? Any input would be appreciated.

Nope, that should work without a hitch!

The only thing I can think of...
Do the two monitors match resolutions? In my case I have a 24 inch and a 51 inch, but they are both 1920x1080. Which makes the picture look its best on both monitors.

Tell is a little more about your setup.

It will work, but as yowen has said, it will work best if both of your monitors are the same native resolution, otherwise one monitor will be running at less than native.

You will also see a slightly performance hit and rise in idle power, but overall this shouldn't affect things too much.

I've seen issues when using a blu-ray drive in protected path where it won't mirror. As long as you own the media, and have an alternate source which can be played in a non-protected path...all is right with the world.

to parrot what others have said:

your HDMI to TV and DVI to monitor configuration ought to work just fine, though your experience and frustration level will be much better if they are both the same resolution, say 1080p. i had a wonderful 1680x1050 Samsung monitor that i sold for a newer 1080p Samsung monitor just so i wouldn't have to reconfigure things when switching between my monitor and 1080p TV.
