alright im looking for a display that i can play xbox 360 on and have as my pc monitor as my dell 19" crt is getting old, i was thinking about the HYUNDAI L90D+ lcd screen, but it might not look good down scaling and its not wide screen,

or i was thinking about that 24" wide screen sony crt (fw900 i think the model was something like that) but its not made anymore and you can find them used on ebay which im a bit warry of since it might go out at any time and you would be skrewed, or i was thinking of just getting an hd tv and hooking my comp up to that except i dont know how good text would look on it.

suggestions on what to get or some recommended screens would be great (keep in mind that this would also be used for homework, game play, and internet browseing so text has to be pretty legible).

You expressed widescreen desire, and LCD thought by the Hyundai... Have you investigated the 2005/2405FPW's? I'd assume you've looked into them since they are the buzz around here, but you didn't make any meantion of them. I personally wouldn't want to use a HDTV for general usage, so I'd stick to some sort of monitor display, be it CRT or LCD.

You actually have a few choices depending on how much you want to spend. First there is the ever popular Dell 2005FPW, this is a nice basic setup with a native resolution of 1680x1050 at about 12-16ms response time. This is a great monitor that has composite, s-video, VGA and DVI inputs and looks great and scales well. The Xbox 360 will have a first party VGA adapter so this isn't a bad choice and for around $400 if you catch in on sale is a steal.

A slight upgrade to that (depending on personal preference) is Gateway's FPD2185W. I personally like this one a little better and have actually seen it in action at my local costco. This monitor has DVI, VGA, Composite, S-video and component input. The component inputs actually do HDTV resolutions of 480p, 720p, 1080i and it looks pretty good, not the best not the worst I have ever seen but better then a lot of other options. It also has a native resolution of 1680x1050 but also has a chip in it that is supposed to be pretty good at scaling and as far as I can tell it seems to do a good job. This runs for $599 and is available at Best Buy and www.gateway.com.
It also has HDCP for future compatibility for watching HD-DVD/Blu-Ray on a Windows Vista machine.

Lastly there is the Dell 2405FPW this is has all the things the 2005FPW has but a high resolution at 1920x1200 and component inputs for 480p, 720p, 1080i and although I haven't confirmed this but should be able to do 1080p as well. It normally runs for around $1000 but can also be found on sale for if you are lucky as low as around $750 but that is pretty rare, usually around $800-$900. No HDCP here and if you game on your PC this super high res display will require you to keep a pretty up-to-date machine.

Hope this helps.

thanks for that solid post agent, I had never seen that gateway before... its looking like the perfect monitor for me.. :D

that's what I said too, in fact I have gotten a couple people at work to fall in love with it too. My one piece of advice for you would be to go into a Best Buy or if you have them in the area a Costco because they have a package system that includes that monitor and take a look at it. Some people who are more sensitive were complaining about the way the grays look on the monitor but I couldn't tell in all honesty.

You may want to check out the thread here, it's all about the Gateway monitor and what some people have thought about it.

I will most likely be picking one up next Tuesday so I will let you know what my impressions are. Keep an eye out in that thread because I will most likely post them there.

the one thing im worried about with an lcd is ghosting, and the resolution making the screen look funky

You can either grab a monitor now, or wait 2 years until SED technology is out on 24'' monitors *drool*

Very nice pun you made there. Very nice indeed. :D

How about a Sony FWD900 24" CRT? 1920*1200 @ 98hz, 2048 @ 80hz. No ghosting, motion blur, can scale res a heck of a lot better. And 225 vs 800 bucks. Though 90lbs :(

Only real down side I can see to the FW900 is that it is the size of a baby elephant. I think my desk would break in half with that monster.
