Does the basic Display Driver give any sort of 3D customization that CCC provides? What are the other differences?

The CCC package is gone in the basic display driver.
However, many people are reporting much less driver crashes with only the display driver, and will use RivaTuner or the like to overclock/tweak fan speed.

I have used just the basic driver package for years for stability reasons. It always seemed when I tried the CCC that I'd run into error messages and/or game crashes, as well as troubles installing the driver itself. If you really need the game to game customization of 3D options (anti aliasing, anisotropic filtering) the only way to get them is with the CCC. I just trust the games to utilize those features and at high resolutions I can't notice the difference anyway.

I also use the driver only. Don't like the excess stuff that comes with a Catalyst Control Center. If anything, use ATI Tray Tools.

I won't have x-fire trouble with just the standard driver? What the crap am I doing with CCC then!

::shoots off to start the driver download::

Confirmation please

CCC not required for 2 cards in crossfire?

So is crossfire always active, I don't know.........?
