display curruption, any idea's?

anyone have any idea what could cause something like this?

its wierd it doesnt happen right away. That picture is from farcry. 1.3 patch. anyway it runs perfect for a while, and eventually will freeze up and you can hear a loud BZZ BZZ BZZ BZZ sound and then when the computer catches up theres this nasty corruption.

This BZZ BZZ BZZ thing happends in UT 2004 sometimes but never causes curruption. It will lock up for 5-10 seconds and then catch up and i never have a problem with it again. wont happen again till i restart comptuer i believe.


my machine specs are in my sig 6800 ultra and i now have an MSI neo 2 k8n board. Waiting for asus to respond to 1 of my 6 emails sent to them about an RMA....

a simple restart fixes the problem....
 
Looks like memory corruption.

Not to be a jerk, but my guess is o/c and/or heat damage. Sry. :(
 
Do you know where the sound is coming from? Turn the speakers off and try to isolate what's buzzing. Have you tried cleaning the video drivers off your system and re-installing them? Have you checked the fan on the 6800U to make sure it's working ok?

At first glace it looks like a hardware failure of your 6800U card. But then you mentioned that...

It will lock up for 5-10 seconds and then catch up and i never have a problem with it again. wont happen again till i restart comptuer i believe

So when it 'recovers' after the lock-up it works fine (even in FC and UT2K4) until the next restart?? :confused:
 
The lock up for about 10 seconds and the BZZ BZZ BZZ sound happends in both FC and UT. There is one difference. In UT when this happends the computer catches back up and everything works fine and normal again. In FC it locks up does the BZZ BZZ BZZ and then when it catches up you see whats above in the screen shots...

The BZZ BZZ BZZ comes from the speakers. i think its the same Milisecond of music playing over and over again. i could be wrong but thought i would note it.

I have a 6800 ultra Ive had it clocked at 460/1200 without problems before. Right now its clocked at 445/1100.Now i had an asus board and this never happend with that board. Now i have an MSI and i think all this started since i bought this board. I want my asus anyway but from the 6 rma emails ive sent then i have yet to get a resp.
 
dude...try clocking your card at stock....play for a day or 2....and if it still happens ...it sounds like your card is bad and/or damaged

Everything works fine and normal again? So if you run UT again after the lock-up it'll run without a problem? Or does it lock-up again?

What are your temps like?

Download, install and run RTHDRIBL in a Window while watching the NV control panel temperature monitor. Also see if you get similar problems running RTDHRIBL as you do FC and UT, this demo is extremely GPU-intensive so it'll be a good test. :)
 
Last time I had this was when my ram went berserk! was upgrading my box until 2 weeks later this happened, and it turned out to be faulty ram, was ok for the first 2 weeks but jus went off after that, got a replacement tho.

So, try another piece of ram or if you got 2 piece (e.g. dual channel) try using one and then the other piece of ram and see which one is faulty (much less chance of having both broken).

Well in UT when i get a lock up it lasts 10 seconds after that 10 seconds i can continue playing. no visual anomolies, no nothing. as long as i dont exit UT i dont believe it happends again, but since i usually only play 1-2 hours at a time i dont think ive tested that theory much... Its just for those 10 seconds i cant do anything. when it does lock up and finnaly catch up my person was running forward the whole time.... after that tho i have full control.

In farcry i get what you see above once it catches up to itself. I then have fully control again but it looks like crap. exiting farcry kept the results even on my Desktop. A reboot will fix the farcry issue tho.

well i ran Prime 95 for almost 4 hours no errors or anything....

clocked at 445/1100 my card is at idle temp 53 degrees c ambient 33
clocked at 445/1100 my card is at load temp 62-63 degrees c ambient 40
this is with UT 2004 running in window'ed mode playing onslaught and making as many particle effects as possible.

clocked at 445/1100 my card at load tem in farcry is 75 degrees c (staring at HDR lighting for 5 minutes then quickly alt tabbing out to see the temp monitor below. as soon as exited went from 75 down to like mid 60's.

all these readings come from the geforce 6800 ultra control panel.
 
ya i would say try stock clocks on the card and see if it keeps happening

also the ram take one stick out and if it keeps doing it try with just the stick you took out in
it could be the ram or maybe even the dimm slots

My old ati 8500le used to screw up like that but with horizontal lines because the connectors were worn down from removing it so many times

Not sure how much memory prime 95 is using, it maybe cpu intensive but not using part of ram that are damaged, cos I can remember when I had that problem, I was able to do pretty much anything (browsing, win apps, etc) without any probs, only memory hungry app such as games that seems to be crapping out.

Your card temps are fine, my 6800nu idle at around 61c, 68 on load.
And that screen capture? it looks exactly like when I was having that problem, with also a loud noise from the speaker. When the third time it happened, my harddrive crashed leaving me an unbootable OS and lost a partition cos of corrupted data being written from ram to disk. :(

It could've be something else but the first thing you should check is the ram.
 
yea, ill check that tomarrow see how it goes, ill try one stick at a time. im just surprised corsair 3200xl memory would turn out crappy. also considering it was the same memory in my old rig without a problem....
 
This is exactly what my card looked like. I took it back to Best Buy and exchanged it for another card and the new one works flawlessly. It turned out to be the card.

Does yours also look bad in the bios screen before windows even loads ? If so, it's the card.

all my troubles started with this post. I thought the problem was fixed but it wasnt, so i uninstalled SP2. Since uninstalling SP2 ive had this problem....

as soon as i got my MSI motherboard i put SP2 on. Had problems and removed it. Havent had a chance to reinstall windows to see if it would fix anything....


should i try this as well and just bypass SP2 all together?
 
His card is being underpowered. You probably have a psu giving off something real low like 19amps to the 12v rail. I have problems like this and they went away when i got my new PSU which now supplies 34amps to the 12v rail

He has the 520 watt Vantec Stealth PSU which is 28 amps on the 12V line. That's the same powersupply I am using at the moment.
 
well heres an odd predicament....

i installed new Nvidia drivers 2 days ago (71.xx) and now i dont seem to be having the problem any more. i gave it 2 days and so far not a single lock up....


hmmmm... Ive only tested it in UT havent played farcry recently but i guess that did it....
