Display Corruption = Video Card?

Hey guys, something weird has been going on with my system. Here's a SS of what it looks like.

Now, it'll load like this one or two times, and I have to restart the system a couple of times to get it to load right. I have no clue what it could be.

The system is not overclocked. I have overclocked in the past but never alot and always kept it within safe ranges. And when it loads like that, the system temps are fine (around 40 degrees) Here are my system specs:

Abit IS7-E (just replaced)
Pentium 4 2.4C
x800 Pro
(2x) Kingston PC3200 Value 512MB
40 GB WD 7200rpm 8mb cache
NEC DVD/CD Burner
Audigy 2 PCI

Monitor = Mag Innovision (crap) 15"

Any ideas?

That is artifacting. The only thing I can think of is your video card. Try underclocking it to see if works. Or perhaps re-install your video card drivers (make sure you actually do a proper uninstallation of that driver first).

Cool. Thanks for the advice. Even though it may not be good news for me (hope it isn't dying on me already).

I noticed that the 5.1s' came out recently. I'll try upgrading to those. And I'll make sure to do a clean install. I would hope that would fix the problem than for me to underclock the card. But we'll see. Will get that done today and update. Thanks again.

Underclocking takes 1 minute of your time. Do that. Reboot. See if that works. Well, try default settings. Otherwise, ahh, try refitting your video card in, test that. Takes 5 minute of your time. If not, then do the entire uninstallation of the driver (which I consider takes up the MOST time-- 10 minutes plus if you're uninstalling then downloading the new driver then installing that).

Nah, I wasn't basing it on a standard of how long it takes; but rather it's a $400 card that I would rather NOT underclock. (Meaning like, I didn't spend all that money to underclock it.) Hehe. None the less, I did the driver reinstall, using the driver cleaner from DH beforehand - and it seems to be working fine so far.

It only artifacts randomly, so it'll take a little time for some more trial and error.

There you go. That's basically why I asked to underclock. There may be something wrong with the card itself. To underclock for TESTING purposes. Of course you wouldn't want to keep it underclocked for a price you paid. Only for a test. If it turns out to be true, then you might as well have to return it to ATI.

Ah ok. Gotcha now. I'll try to underclock, then turn on overdrive and see if it'll let me then with no artifacting.

By how much would you suggest that I underclock to test? And just underclock the core speed or the memory also?

Of course, underclock to the lowest it can go and see if there's any artifacts. Then clock it up towards its default settings. If artifacts pop up, it's a bad one. Definitely. Call up ATI.

Just leave Overdrive off then. Either your core or cooling solution just can't handle it.

Well, I'm running 5 case fans, mostly directed toward the cpu/gpu, 3 intakes, 2 exhaust.

It let me overclock in the past with not problems whatsoever. And as a matter of fact, ambient temps would be lower due to the season.

For now, I'm just leaving the OD off, and I will do that underclock and see what happens. I'm going to review my warranty to make sure I can get this thing replaced with a new one.
