This Disney patent application just said "preferably the visible light passes through an atmosphere containing particulate matter." I guess everyone will be wearing some form of Darth Vader / Sith breathing apparatus to actually use this lightsaber training experience?

A process and system capture infrared light that is reflected or emitted from a device to precisely locate the device. The process and system project visible light from a light source toward the device such that the light is precisely targeted at the device. Preferably the visible light passes through an atmosphere containing particulate matter rendering the visible light as a beam that appears to emanate from the device rather than from the light source.

Just looking at the diagram, and of course never actually R'ingTFA, seems the particulate matter would be trapped somehow around the lightsaber, thus what renders the light visible only there?

But if that's the case, wouldn't it just be easier to trap a fine dust in a glass lightsaber shaped tube (with a small fan to keep it moving?) and then have a wide laser beam that gets stopped at the top of the glass?

At first, I read the animatronics part and figured they may just be doing a version of the hologram displays. Light being projected onto a slanted glass to line up with the animatronic characters saber. If the viewer is far enough away, it could look good from most angles.

But then they talk about other tech, including haptic vests, and such.

Its crazy how you can patent science fiction now. Patent anything even if you can't make it.

Is it infra-red or visible light? They contradict themselves.

Infrared light can be used as a pump source and frequency doubled via SHG to green but good luck doing that in a moving optical design like a lightsaber (from a remote pump source). Alignment is critical to this process.

The reason they have an external source is this is the only way to make a beam 'end'.. it's a geometry problem. That said they will still need optics to interact with a beam or laser or gas cavity.

It could theoretically be done using similar approach to Coherent does in their OPSL systems as below. Or, possibly using thin disc lasers in SHG. However all HIGHLY improbably to have any remotely effective output or use. That said, particulate matter will likely be theatrical smoke in this case.
Or, if they are using 'particulate matter' aka a gas charge, yeah no. They're less than 1% efficient and it's just not viable.

Is this a "real lights are" like those "real hoverboard"
...

Redefine to meet...

those would work if they are simply exciting particles in a vacuum tube by projecting uv light at them, that is how black light concerts work... but that means their light sabers would not work if it is too cold or too hot, and if there is condensation that will refract the projected light in a different direction. kinda like if if there is fog on the ground it will take your light saber blade from you... my guess is they plan to build light saber areas inside a paint ball style areas type thing a ma jig.
