I am planning on building/buying a new disk-to-disk backup solution. I currently backup 400-500GB uncompressed with a full backup. I plan to do incrementals mon-thurs and full over the weekend. I have a HUGE window to do this. From 8pm until 5 am so I was thinking of going SATA 400gb drives to save the cost since SCSI speed is not needed. I was looking at a few different ways I could go about doing it and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. I have thought of maybe buying 1 or 2 of those 1.6 TB buffalo network USB2.0 devices. The drives are in a raid 5. I have also thought about just buying a nice 2u/3u rack server with sata backplane and building my own server. I have also thought about some type of attached storage with sata drives connected via network or scsi3.

I have windows 2000/2003 servers and I will be using veritas backup exec 9.1. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I would like to keep this project under $8,000-$10,000. Like I said, I have a very large amount of time to do the backups so blazing speed scsi speed is not needed.
 
How much growth are you expecting? Four 400GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 gets you 800GB in RAID-5 and a hot spare, all on a relatively inexpensive four port SATA card. If you anticipate growth beyond 800GB during the lifetime of the system, an 8 port card will allow you to stretch the array 2.4TB with a hot spare. The host system doesn't need to be anything special - if this is the only task for the box, a Celeron D would be plenty of horsepower (especially if you get a RAID card with hardware accelrated XOR for RAID-5 parity calculations) although a high bandwidth PCI-X or PCI Express slot would be desirable.
 
Recommend a certain 8 port card? I would rather have more than enough than go cheap and fall short in a year.

A friend of mine had good luck with this card.

Intel or AMD for cpu? Ever bought any cases from www.servercase.com

Tekram has a 12 and 16 and even a 24 port SATA (24-port is PCI-X only) card, might want to look at those.
