Disk Setup

What's the best disk setup for this?

I have a directory that has a bunch of sub directories - probably near 4000 sub directories - each one of those directories has between 5-20 files. Each file is around 100-150 KB on average - the lowest being around 50, highest around 500KB.

Most of the operations on these files are read. Just reads in the file. 90% of the time the disk is just reading them. It's mostly "random" - it picks a file from some random directory and reads it.

What's the best setup for this:

Single 15.4K Cheetah (scsi, 15,000)
Two 10K SATA drives in Mirror (Raid 1)

By my math, that's only around 4 gigs of data - 4000*10*100 = 4e6KB. Put 4 gigs of memory in the machine and use raid 1 on a good controller. The OS should cache that stuff pretty well if it's getting hit a lot.

If you do decide to go with a single drive, make it a Fujitsu MAX. Seagate SCSI drives are overpriced and underperforming. Compare a Fujitsu MAX3073RC 73GB SAS to a Seagate Cheetah 15K.4 73GB SAS and you'll see what I mean. The Fujitsu is only $50 more, and it practically doubles the performance of the Seagate. And it lets you use SAS, which means nicer cabling and better expansion options.
