I have a 160GB Maxtor that I've used for a couple of years now that seems to be freaking on me. I use it in another computer as a kind of remote storage machine and can see the contents of the drive through network places, I can map it out as a network drive on other computers, and can see all the contents when connected to the server remotely.

I can't transfer any files from the drive to other computers or to another drive in the same computer. I haven't heard any clicks or other abnormalities and the drive has worked fine until today. I used the chkdsk command and it turned up all kinds of bad sectors and indexes and when it tried to recover the bad areas it said "an unspecified error occurred".

In short, I have no trouble accessing the disk, but I can't transfer files from it, nor can I utilize any file on it (ie. playing mp3s, video files, opening pdfs/word docs). All of the other drives in the computer work flawlessly.

I just need to get this drive serviceable enough to transfer the files to another drive/s and/or burn the contents to DVDs. If that's not an option, will ghosting the contents to another drive work?

If you have another drive with enough room to Ghost it to, I'd say that's the easiest way to do it. But I don't think that will work. Try running the Maxtor diagnostic tool (from the UBCD) on it and see what it says.
