Disk Read Fail

I wiped everything clean and then went to go install a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro.

I went to format my two hard drives and if I did the normal NTFS format (not quick) at 100% I would get an error saying the hard drive was unable to be formatted. I can do a "Quick" format and it would work, but now when I restart the PC where I would get the "Press Any Key To Boot From CD" I get "Disk Read Fail".

If I leave the Windows XP in the drive and not hit anything when the Boot from CD line pops up, it boots up like normal.

Any Ideas? Are my hard drives fried or can they still be recovered.

I have one SATA drive, which I believe is this model: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=100714

and one IDE drive which is a 40GB and im not sure who makes it, im thinking Maxtor.

check the jumpers of the HDDs and Opticals
make sure they are Master\Slave or Master without a Slave Present (Single)

make sure the Master is attched to the End of the cable (Black connector) and the Slave to the Grey in the middle

Dont attach a Master to the Middle connector

Make sure they are all properly recognized in the BIOS

If that fails, Try setting them to CS (Cable Select) and check the BIOS again
\
If that Fails, try a different Cable
If THAT Fails try a different Configuration (Drives to Channels)

and review these for why SATA is the future

Fancy IDE Leads

If all the above fails, try just a single drive per channel
and test it with the HDD manufacturers Diagnostic Utility

for Maxtor that would be
PowerMax
