Disk Read Error

Everytime i try and boot up my computer, it makes it through the main BIOS screen, then makes the beep that indicates everything has posted, then goes to a black screen that says

"A Disk Read Error Has Occured, Press Crtl Alt Dlt to Restart"

Please tell me my HDD did not take a dive

Try disabling the floppy drive in the BIOS and restarting - I had a bad floppy drive once that did this. Also reseat all your data cables.

the floppy drive is disabled, and my CD Drive isn't hooked up either, just my HDD is. And I keep getting this error !!!!

Check your cabling, then if that fails, download the UBCD and do some drive fitness tests.. It sounds to me like your drive might have taken a dive.

I had the same thing happen to me...here is what caused it and how I fixed it.

I had installed Vista Beta 1 on a maxtor 160 gb drive...then decided I didnt want it anymore. When I tried to overinstall WinXP, the first part of the install worked fine. On the first reboot I got the same message you had.

I tried using Fixboot and fixmbr in the recovery console with no effect. If I installed to another drive then tried to used Drive manager in WinXP to delete the partition and recreate it, that seemed to work. But then if I tired to install anythign to that drive I would ge that same message.

How I ended up fixing after all the trial and error was using the MaxBlast tool from maxtor to lowlevel the drive then reset up the partitions again.

Now I can install again ontot hat drive.

I think vista screwed up the partitio table bad and XP either didnt see the problem or couldnt fix it.

I would grab the tools from whatever OEM that drive is from and lowleveling it that way. If the drive is recoverable at all, that should work.
