Disk Partitions

Hey guys, wanted to get your opinion here of the best route to go.

I have a 30TB Disk attached to a server, there is a 15TB partition at the of the disk and 15TB of free space at the start of the disk. Do to the way the partition tables work you cant expand a partition backwards on a disk, so i have two options.

1. Convert to dynamic disk, expand partition to 30TB
2. Use some software to try to move the existing partition to the start of the disk then expand it to 30TB

Thoughts? There's too much data to temporarily offset somewhere while i nuke and recreate the partition.

Can't you create a new partition at the beginning, move all the data over, remove the partition at the end of the disk, then expand the new one?

Backup data is sitting on the partition. We would need to stop backups for the duration of the data move which would be too long I believe. Has anyone run into issues with dynamic disks?

So constantly copy it (robocopy's /MIR comes to mind) until the two partitions' data are synchronized. Just because it's changing constantly doesn't mean you can't copy from it.

Snowknight is on the right track. You need to do a two pass sync

First you sync the data (rsync, robocopy, etc) while the system is live, then take the system offline and run another sync. The offline sync covers all the deltas that occur during the live sync and should be significantly faster. If needed you can do multiple live sync passes to reduce the duration of the offline sync even further (this is subject to diminishing returns)

Honestly i've never tried that before, sounds good though. I'll look into it. Is there a downside to just converting it to a dynamic disk though? Thanks!

Using a standard partition avoids unnecessary complexity in your partition layout.
