Hey, my cousins laptop is running Windows 2000, and a couple of weeks ago she was installing adobe acrobat reader something happened to her computer and she had to manually restart (im not too sure on what exactly happened). After restarting windows started to run scandisk, which is fine, except for that it wont complete because it says other programs are writing to the disk, which they arent (closed all programs in task manager, ctrl+alt+del except explorer) somethings up and im afraid her hard drive may be dieng? any ideas

oh and i also tryed to defrag but it says the hard drive contains errors and that i must run scan disk, but the same problem happens.

thanks

Check for viruses and Spybots first - they may be creating problems. If they aren't, well perhaps the only real solution is a reformat - not the best solution, I know, but it could be the only solution.

ah ok thanks, yeah i just told my cousin to see if she has a virus scanning program cuz i had a feeling it could be that too.. thanks for the help so far

Well, I think the exact error you're getting is something like "Cannot get exclusive access to drive X" or something like that.

Anyway, the "Other" program writing to the drive is...tada, Windows 2000! In order to do all the options, you have to make it reboot and do a disk check before the main portion of Windows loads.
