Disk dropped from RAID array, but still shows online

I was using my computer and it comes up and says a disk has been dropped from the RAID5 array. I reboot and check in the BIOS, it shows the array as Critical, but all the disks are online. RAIDConsole in Windows shows the same thing. WTF?

RAID controller is a Broadcom BC4452
Disks are 4 x WD3200JD

 
It may have dropped but then immediately re-added itself, and now it's rebuilding. Are there more detailed "properties" windows for the drives or anything?

Well, I guess you found the bad disk, anyways. Does the documentation go through dropping and re-adding a disk?

I rebuilt the array last time this happened
took like 24 hours

I'm about ready to ditch these drives for some RAID edition ones
 
I'm not sure that RE drives would help here. That would just make the drives report errors sooner, possibly dropping them from the array faster and leading back to this again. I'd talk to Broadcom tech support (*shudder*) and see what they have to say about it.

You may at least be able to change the rebuild speed; I know with my array it defaults to 1 MB/s or something like that. Setting it higher (obviously) makes it go faster.

 
I think the drive was dropped, but picked right back up. All of them show up, except when you lookat the array details. Before, it would show the number of the missing drive when I booted up, which it doesn't now.

I'm gonna try to rebuild the array.
 
Keep in mind that the Error Recovery Bug on desktop Caviars causes the drive to stop responding to the RAID controller, while the drive is performing error recovery. At least at first glance, this sounds like your issue - the drive "disappears" but then works normally on reboot etc. I'd want to move to RE units ASAP.
