Used the windows xp formatting program to format my second harddrive in safe mode windows XP. It said it´s completed successfully with no errors but when I boot up it don´t show up?

I used ntfs at default clustersize with compression enabled for formatting. Before I just ran it FAT32.

The obvious first, make sure the jumpers are correct.

Then in normal Windows start up, go to: control panel/administrative tools/computer setup/disk management, and if the drive shows there, right-click it and format.

If it's a big drive and you don't have XP's Service Pack 1 update, then XP won't see the full size of the drive, until you get the update first. In that case, get the update first, then do as I wrote above.

I haven´t removed my harddrive from my comp. It´s where it´s always been. And it shows up in the device manager. I wonder do I have to make it bootable to make it show up in windows XP?

Hmm I just tried to right click the unit and format but that didn´t give it a label. I guess that is what caused it. I don´t know yet I am only at 6 % right now :)

think your on the right track, might have been a permissions issue
but a reformat from inside the native Disk Management should fix all ;)

GOD DAMN IT REFORMATTING DISASTER!!

yeah it worked. I managed to format my second harddrive and move all my important data to it.

I want to reformat my first harddrive in 2 partitions and one with 32 bit cluster size. But I can´t afford Partition Manager 8.0 and I just hoped the Ultimate Boot manager would have a utility that would allow me to do that.

However none ofthe UBCD freeware formatting drivers could help me with that. But it let me create 2 partitions.

So seeing that the windows XP disk manager could do that I decided to go the long route and install windows XP on my second harddrive so I could reformat my first harddrive since you can´t reformat your system harddrive.

So I insert my windows XP CD and choose my second harddrive to install to. However for some F&%&%&ng reason windows refuse me to install on the existing ntfs default partition.

So with two keypresses with 0 thinking ahead I hit C and then L to erase the partition!!! Congratulations I now lost 7 gig of data and some vital save games. Awesome! No partition undeleter in the world could help me with that obviously since I tried the useless UBCD utilities.

Anyway so there is nothing else to do than to reformat my second harddrive and install win xp on that. But the install program insist to reformat my first harddrives primary partition as well. The one that I want to have 32-bit cluster size in and not the extended that will have the default cluster size.

So I install which takes about an hour and after that make so my first harddrive aren´t bootable. Can´t boot from the 2nd harddrive either since I got a ntker error or something but finally UBCD comes to use letting me boot from 2nd harddrive.

So I boot and try to format my first harddrive. Fast formatting wasn´t allowed by slow formatting seems to work just fine. I wait another half an hour or so and when it´s at 99 and all going well I get the message the formatting wasn´t completed!!!

So what the hell am I supposed to do? I refuse to format my harddrive at 4 kb cluster size no that I have come so far and made such sacrifices! fdisk only wants to format FAT32 it seems and I want NTFS!

And I just can´t afford Partition manager 8 and I want it done tonight goddamnit

I feel your pain, man.

I went through the hell of adding a second, bigger drive, about a month ago. I had done it many times before, but out of curiosity (stupidity) decided to give WD's Data Lifeguard utility a shot. Big mistake............ Not only was it pointless, in that I had to go through all these screens of 'next' 'next', only to come to "You have XP. Close Data Lifeguard and use XP instead", but somehow that shit application erased the partitions on my old drive, and made 40+ GB of old data vanish (unrecoverable).

Anyway, my only other advice is to stay away from crap manufacturer drive applications.

Yeah and now when I got it all working my second harddrive seems to die on me

It´s just unbelievable. I had some trouble before but managed to save it with some IBM tools (or hitachi nowadays) and it worked fine for a month without a single problem.

But now whenever I boot it take ages and disconnecting the drive solved that issue. I guess I will have to try formatting it again and if not that help RMA it. I got 1-2 months still on my warranty.

Now I only need to find new Audigy 2 software. I had it on my harddrive and have a real problem finding it on the web again :(
