I'm trying to decide on the best design from both a storage and filesystem perspective for my new machine and am looking for some suggestions.
As I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro my options on the filesystem are limited but I'm wondering how many people out there are running storage spaces / refs and are they happy with it? In addition to which is it possible to format a single HDD using refs and use it as an offline backup drive?
My basic thinking is along these lines:-
1x 256GB SSD - Operating system / NTFS (should allow me to re-install without having to re-install everything)
1x 256GB SSD - Programs / NTFS
1x 512GB SSD - Virtual Machine datastore / EXT4 (although the storage appliance will need to go elsewhere)
2x 3TB HDD - Data files e.g. photos, documents, films etc / refs storage pool utilising RAID1 (added benefit of datarot protection)
1x 3TB HDD - Backup offline drive (icydock removable tray) for isolated backup / refs if this is possible? Does refs heal if the bits swap over through it's own checksums or does it rely on the other disks in the pool?
Quite a few disks I know, I'd rather use RAID1 than other capabilities and I don't trust HW or software RAID enough on it's own.
Thanks
