trying to install winxp. i got the windows xp professional CD. retail cd. looks good. no big smudges or scratches that i can see. not a new cd. i set 1st boot device CDROM in bios. i put the cd in and restart. it reads the cd rom, says Boot from CD: sits there about 5 sec, then says DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.
the dvd drive light blinks so i know its reading it. the jumpers are set corectly and its in the IDE 1 slot... could it be that its a dvd player? should i barrow my other computers cd rom?

under bios standard cmos features under IDE primary master it just says " [ " there is nothing there, not even a [None]
IDE primary master [
ide primary slave [none]
ide secodary master [none]
ide secondary slave [none]
ide third master [none]
ide forth master [st380817as]
ide fifth master [none]
ide sixth master [none]

athlon 64 3000
msi k8n neo4
benq 1620 dvd rw
i think that would be all the info you need.

Sounds like a drive prob. Try putting the cd drive to a dif cable and check the drive pins.

EDIT: Check to see if the red line on the ide cable is on the "1" side of the drive to. I have done that before.

the plug on the mobo is keyed so i know its in right. feels loose tho, easy to pull out. but its in there. i cant think of anything wrong. im trying my cd rom drive right now and same thing.

i will chill for a bit then try the actual cables from my other computer.

Ya but some cables don't have a key on the drive side of it.

i switched cables and it works now, but now it says setup could not read the cd you inserted or the cd is not a valid windows cd........

i think my cd is corupted =( it keeps complaining about a file being bad or something.... maybe i can barrow som1s cd. i have my own key just need a cd

you should try making a copy of your OS cd on another computer.. also - are you positive that your cd/dvd drive isn't defective or something..?

i've had errors reading certain files and it was actually a memory problem. the pc read them fine off the cd, it's just when they were pulled from main memory that there were issues
