As you increase the front side buss speed there is a chance (likely) that you are also increasing the speed of the PCI buss that your Hard Drive uses. This has annoyed your Hard Drive and it has decided to decline to speak to anyone in a manner they can understand leaving your CPU confused and unhappy.
Some motherboards have settings to overcome this difficulity.
We would need your motherboard manuf and model number to help you further.

Since I only have PC3200 RAM and stock cooling, I am only looking to set FSB at 215 max (3.0GHz). Would 230 FSB (3.2GHz) even be possible with PC3200? I would prob get a Zalamn CU for this. My CPU currently runs 60 load and 45 idle.
try ANADD for your accelerator settings. give the ram as much voltage as possible, as well as the agp slot. lock your nb strap to 800mhz, set your ram ratio to 5:4.
I locked PCI/AGP at 66/33. Now I got it running stable at 3.2 (228 FSB) and 44C idle and 59C on Farcry and CS:S. Should I try to go for 3.4 (243 FSB) with PC3200 RAM and stock cooling?
as long as the temps aren't too bad, go for it! I'm running stock cooling and my processor has been ticking away at atleast 900mhz pretty much since day one, and that was almost a year and a half ago. I'm gonna get alternative cooling soon, though. I wanna be able to let this puppy sit at 3.6+ w/no worries.
I am currently stable at 3.4GHz and idling at 45C. I just ran memtest and got the following errors. This RAM is less than a week old and I hadn't run memtest on it previous to ocerclocking it, so I am not sure yet what is causing the problems. But for now, I'm going for 3.6GHz.
With RAM voltage increased to 2.8v and FSB upped to 257 it will not boot. I get a screen telling me that the CPU has been changed and I must go back into BIOS and reset it. Right now the FSB is at 250 and RAM is at 2.7v. Have I maxed it out at 3.5GHz? Also, what should I do about the RAM errors? Do I need to RMA it?
Ah! I was just running Prime95, iTunes, AIM, and Opera and the comp restarted on me. CPU temps were normal (around 45C) and it was at 3.5GHz. I am now going back to 3.4GHz where it was stable earlier.
well, now you know the limits with what you have. I'd try relaxing the RAM timings and if that doesn't work for the errors, I'd RMA it. It should be fine w/2.8 volts, most RAM usually likes more voltage, kinda weird...

Huh ! RMA it ? pc3200 is rated for 200MHz and the ram is up to 242MHz FSB (with some errors, wonder why?) with SPD stock timings unless it was changed and not mentioned.
Didnt say but I image it would have been mentioned if this was super duper fancy xms turbo streamlined low latency gee wizz overclocker memory and even then it would be a decent overclock.
I am of the opinion that ram should be worshiped at least twice daily and left offerings of food or a bucket of electrons, or something, that is almost a %25 overclock with stock speed settings.
There is nothing wrong with the ram, you are pushing it too hard, you need to set your ram speed to manual and relax the timings if you want to go faster, or back off the FSB speed till memtest gives no errors or stay where you are and relax the timings until the errors go away.
If your rma it, the odds are the next sticks will not do as well.
Read the sticky, it will give you a headache but be worth it in the end.
Maybe Corsair (which I know is good and have used before) has gotten a lot better at overclocking with the standard memory and I am completely wrong, would not be the first time, but I dont think so.
k, I am not expert at Intel boards but it would be safe to do it like this,
the first number is usually your CAS timing and you want to keep that at 3 and probally cant go higher anyway.
try each one of these till the memtest errors go away, then bump up the FSB one or two mhz and retest, when you start getting errors again use the next set of numbers. at some point the slowdown of memory will not be made up by increasing the FSB. Thats when you have to run other benchmarks to find your "sweet spot:. For example my ram will go up to 248 MHz but where I have it now is most stable and fastest from an overall machine performance view.
