My friend is having some issues getting online. Would anyone have any insight as to what is causing this?

"I am able to connect via a dial up to the internet, but am disconected with 14-20 seconds without any reason being given. During those brief seconds connected, I am completely able to navigate as normal, so I am certain that a connection is actually being made.

I have tried a different modem, reinstalling windows, and changing all cables going back to the wall with no change. I have used a friends laptop to verify that I can connect via the account, and have no problems with the laptop. Any help that can be offered here would be very greatly appreciated. I am quite ready to burn the computer."
 
What model modems have you tried so far? What connection speeds have you gotten when you do connect?
 
crap, I would have pointed you to vee90.net. Back when that was a real site, they had real information, from a layman's explanation to telco technical level stuff.

At any rate:

Use the shortest possible phone cable. Don't use splitters or couplers. Try different extensions in the home, you might have a faulty one. Test at the NID (grey box outside, it has a test jack), try different modem's, update win-modem drivers, use a controllerless based (refered to as "Hardware" modems by the old skoolers), remove cheap cordless phones from your phone system, remove other phone devices from the phone system 1 by 1 to eliminate potential interference. Listen to your phone lines for static/echoes, etc.

3com/USRobotics (Non-Winmodem) modems are the best out there. They cost 50-60 online but if all you have is 56k they are a must. My rule of thumb is "If it dont work in Linux, its not worth buying." External serial-port modems are a safer bet.

Dialup is all about least interference possible.
