:( This happened two nights ago:

Running a Laing DDC pump with Petra's top. It doesn't always start up and sometimes it randomly stops, but this time it stopped and the CPU temperature shot up, the PC died before I got the chance to kill it, and it toasted my beloved Abit AN8-32X's MOSFETs, causing a short in the CPU power circuits (now no PSU will fire up with the 4-pin 12V connector plugged into my board, regardless of CPU presence).

THANK GOODNESS my Opteron 170 LC9BE (stock 2GHz, OC 2.97GHz Orthos stable) survived, although I don't know whether she'll ever overclock again. I'm running her in my old Asus A8N-VM.

The problem isn't my power supply - the pump doesn't always start up first time on an otherwise totally unloaded Corsair HX520, or any other of three or four power supplies I've used.

Can I go to anyone (Laing, Abit) to get a motherboard replacement, or does this count as my fault? I've mauled the motherboard's heatsink system far too much for it to still be in warranty, and dripped a bit of tea on it since I pulled it...

Sorry cross-posted but this way I'm not thread hijacking.

esp since the mobo has been through other abuses (tea, earl grey, hot) I'm not sure what you should ask for. Suprising it burned up b4 auto shutdown, most WB have enough sink mass to them to usually prevent that. More details of rest of WC system?

sorry to hear about it, good luck:(

It counts as your fault technically... So, you're out of luck with a replacement. I'd try to RMA it anyways.

Laing will RMA the pump though. (I'd go through your place of purchase before contacting Laing).

This is why I always use a few software programs to shut down with temperatures 15-20c over normal.

I wonder why the MOSFET's died due to CPU heat?

Yeah I'm very suprised the computer didn't auto shutdown when the temps hit the roof. I know I set my computer to 60c shutdown temperature just in case.

Rather odd. You could contact Liang about a pump replacement but as for the motherboard itself...probably not.

me to...shutdown at 60C:)

Sorry to hear about the the failure. The pump didnt have a tachometer cable attached?

If you cant get an RMA, ive got some Laing DDC-1 pumps lying around that i could let go of for a few bucks, but i cant guarantee they will do the same thing.

All stuff was in place to prevent it happening :( thanks for your replies guys - I'm going to buy another mobo, possibly an AN8 Ultra as they're cheap, to keep my Opteron 170 going and water-cooled.

I haven't been around or replied because I've just lost heart with the whole thing :( my beautiful new case, my loop, my graphics card, my brand new Corsair HX520 PSU, it's all been sitting there doing nothing :(

I've been running since with my old rubbish Asus A8N-VM in a budget case with the stock HSF and just not cared.

I can't remember who I bought the pump from, but I'll have a look through some packaging now. I'll reinstate the original pump top and take off Petra's Top, and go from there. It was beautifully quiet and effective while it worked, so I'd quite like it really if Laing would replace it with a new one (a newer revision perhaps).

I think my motherboard can be a piece of modern art.

I have that question too, how come it is your MOSFETS that died when it is your CPU that lost its cooling, not the MOSFETS.

Generally speaking, a semiconductor's resistance drops as the temperature goes up. So it's possible that the CPU was drawing more current as it's temp went up. If there wasn't any cooling (e.g. blow by from a HS/F) on the MOSFETs, they could have easily overheated and been damaged.

Afterwards, it would not only refuse to POST (including after a CMOS clear), the only way I could get the thing to stay running at all for more than a split second was to disconnect the P4/12V connector. This said, to me, that there was a short circuit in the MOSFETs supplying the CPU.

I removed the MOSFET heatsink and behold:

Yes, that black shit DID ooze out of the MOSFET.

Ryan, that's exactly what I reckon happened.

Watercool 120x2 radiator with Yate Loon fans, Laing DDC with Petra's Top, 7/16" Masterkleer tubing, T-line, EK-Wave CPU block, DangerDen Maze 4 GPU block.

Just for the record, this must be the tea:

Don't know why, but my old abit an8-32x was the opposite; it always shut down when uguru showed 60c.

Except, it was never right. It showed that it was always hovering 55-56. Coretemp and speedfan and a digital thermometer showed that the temperature was never more than 33-34c.

Try an RMA.

Try an RMA.

I've mauled it far too much - I actually chopped up the silly OTES heatpipe thingy to make way for better cooling :p they wouldn't be impressed.

WTF? Is that pubic hair?

Bear in mind that the pin pitch is 1.27mm. I don't know about yours, but my pubic hairs aren't that tiny.:D

Oh didn't think of that. It does look odd though. I just saw it and was like "ewww".

Scrub the CPU socket with some alcohol, call Abit, set up an RMA and pop a M.O. for $25 in the box as Abit will RMA any board irregardless of age or warranty for $25. They did that after the whole bad cap fiasco and as far as I am aware the practice continues to this day.

Even with the heatpipe and sinks thrown away? I might, although it means shipping it back across the Atlantic (which is also where I ordered it from in the first place).
