Any PSU's stand out as highly rated but disappointing

or

fair to poorly rated but surprisingly good?

I'd suggest the PSU buying guide or whatever...bad PSU makers occasionally put out kickass units and good PSU makers occasionally screw up.

Perhaps, but not in a cohesive singular thread :)

But.. but... we don't have the technology. To make a thread so singular... so cohesive... would take... take.... resources unbeknownst to this galaxy!!!!!!

ass-pire. Everyone seems to love them, even though they obviously aren't that great.

For suprises, I'd say Fortron. really, really cheap, great quality, cheap, and cheap. Oh, did I mention great quality?

Dissapointing? Well, I can definately say Powmax products become a terrible dissapointment. Newbies will view wattage numbers, then pricing to determine their purchase and Powmax does a GREAT job at both of those. Now, if only they did that good of a job with the reality of the numbers :)

Suprising? Any PCPower&Cooling psu will suprise a newb at how efficient and true the numbers are.

I don't know wee. I think everyone expects crap from Powmax and good stuff from PCP&C. ;)

Disappointment: Like Bbq said; Aspire and any other PSU that takes someone else's power supply and slaps a label on it of exaggerated claims. Cooler Master eXtreme Power 600W, Hiper Type-R, MGE Duro 900W, etc.

Surprise: The Nextherm 460W. That one came from out of the blue and surprised me with excellent efficiency, stable rails, PFC and all for well under $100.

like a Flux Capacitor?

Dissapointment: blinged up generic power supplies. Logisys, powmax, deer, etc.

Is Deer not the most horrid name for a line of psu's ever conceived? I mean, I can understand a n00b looking for a psu and saying to him/herself: "hmm, powmax, like, maximum power? That sounds good to me!" But Deer? "Hmmm, Deer, a highly-shootable quadraped that also tends to get hit by cars...this must be a great psu!"

Here's an upside surprise: my old Enlight 350W, or is it Enhance? Anywho it came with
one of the Enlight/Enhance cases quite some time ago, rated 15A on the 12v, and weighs like
a stack of bricks. Rock solid for 4 yrs.

The worst names for PSU's.

Logisys Pit Bull. Hmm, that one might just bite me in the ass.
Thermaltake PurePower. As opposed to unpure power?
Hiper Type R. Got honda? (I like the looks of the supply though)
XG Vortec. I'd rather have a power supply that is spelled correctly, thank you very much
Antec TruePower: Untrue power? false?
OCZ Powerstream: I want a stream running thru my backyard with power coming from it.

:( :(

Sorry about that. It's not as bad as some others, but nothing, ever, beats "Hmmm, Deer, a highly-shootable quadraped that also tends to get hit by cars...this must be a great psu!"

I had a purepower in my p4 :)

Not to mention how Newegg liked to list Purepowers as "Silent Purepower" in their product description. Tricked me into getting a 420w Purepower Space Heater. Gave it to my brother who thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread because of the long cables and gold plated fan grill. With marketing and asthetics who needs performance?(wink wink nudge nudge)

That's my disappoinment but my surprise was the Seasonic I bought to replace it. It was from a company I had never heard of at the time and was unsure about at first. Low and behold it really was silent as advertised and the rails were much more stable with a multimeter.

I thought that consumers at least knew enough to avoid the very worst light-as-a-feather PSUs like Powmax, but a couple of weeks ago, when Fry's had a 420W Powmax & case for free after rebate, I heard somebody want to buy that product but pass up a free-after-rebate 350W Ultra PSU. Fortunately another customer talked him into buying the Ultra to replace the Powmax.

I was building a computer for my brother. I bought a case that had a RoseWill PSU in it. That PSU was utter crap. I bought another for him. Without thinking I bought another RoseWill. I was reading the reviews on new egg. This PSU was suprisingly heavy and quiet. I normally spend more on better quality PSUs. But, this was an extreme budget build. I even bought a second when my father PSU died.

Speaking of rebates.....

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...asp?EdpNo=2168976&sku=TC3J-2134&CMP=ILC-FPM03

Which has to be the wierdest rebate I've ever seen. Because if you buy the power supply separately... even with the same rebate... you STILL pay three times as much as you would if you get it with the case:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1273330&sku=ULT31839

And if you use the rebate for the case on just the case, you end up paying the same!

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1779365&sku=GEN-1000

Is this a screw up or just really bizarre math?!?! Disappointment? Surprise? Where's my flux capacitor?

Impressive. $9.99 for the case + psu, or $9.99 for just the case, or $29.99 for just the psu.

Sounds like someone knows computer math.

Yeah.. It's bizarre. I dare not post it in the "deals" forum.

Oh wow.. anyone have any experiance with that case or PSU? I might spring for the deal...
