Hello,
I just upgraded my rig and there's a kink in my storage that I can't seem to work out. I have an Asrock Z97 Extreme6 with the following SATA layout:
0: Boot SSD
3: Extra storage SSD (hooray for dropping prices!)
1: empty
4: 3 GB storage HDD
2: 2 GB RAID1 HDD
5: 2GB RAID1 HDD
In case it matters, the 2 GB drives were RAIDed under the Marvell controller on my previous Rampage III Gene, and were detected as RAID volumes by the Intel controller on my current board. I noticed right away after installing Windows that although my boot time is fairly short, the time it takes to resume from sleep can be anywhere from 15 seconds to a full minute. Checking the Intel Rapid Storage Technology manager shows that one of my RAIDed drives actually disappears after sleeping, and the long wake time is then presumably due to the controller looking for it and timing out.
I noticed that the disappearing drives follow a pattern: first one drive consistently disappears (always the same drive). However, if I unplug the SATA connector on the disappearing drive, restart, and then sleep, upon wake the other RAIDed drive will also disappear. For example, here is the test that I just ran of which ports report connected drives after the given operation:
Boot from off:
ports 2 and 5 both show HDDs
sleep
port 2 shows HDD. Port 5 shows empty.
restart the PC (start -> restart)
port 2 shows HDD. Port 5 shows empty.
restart the PC (start -> restart)
port 2 shows HDD. Port 5 shows empty.
restart the PC (start -> shut down. Then power button)
ports 2 and 5 both show HDDs
sleep
port 2 shows HDD. Port 5 shows empty.
shut down, unplug port 5 SATA connector from motherboard
port 2 shows HDD. Port 5 shows empty (duh)
sleep
Both ports show empty.
Although I didn't explicitly record it, I saw the exact same behavior swapping the motherboard SATA ports for the RAIDed drives from 2,5 to 1,4, so I don't think it's a board defect unless it affects the entire panel of SATA connectors. However, none of my non-RAIDed drives have ever disappeared so I'm inclined to say it's something with my RAID configuration. I originally thought it might have been the drive on port 5, but now I'm not sure since the clone on port 2 also disappears after sleep if the other drive is removed. My BIOS is flashed to the latest version and I also have the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology software and driver installed. I've also reseated all of the SATA cables on both ends.
Could someone please advise on how to fix this?
