Disabling DMA

I am trying to upgrade firmware on an external DVD writer. Source of update is asking that I disable DMA. I looked at the drive in device manager but couldn't quite figure out where to turn DDMA off.

Can anyone one assist me? Thank you.

go to device manager, then to IDE ATA/ATAPI Devices, then right click on Secondary IDE channel, then go to the advanced tab, theres a menu called accessing mode and it will be set to DMA if available, you could set it to PIO only.

I remember there beeing a way you could turn it off on a specific drive with a click box but i dont remember where

Is it firewire or usb? You can't turn dma off for just one external device. I don't even know that you can disable dma for firewire or usb. They would be pretty pointless without dma. Maybe you are reading the directions for internal drives.

I think the click box thingy was in Win98...

Id mount the drive internally via the IDE to flash it


Start > Run > (type) Compmgmt.msc > Device Manager > IDE ATA\ATAPI controllers > Primary or Secondary Channel > Advanced Settings > Device 0 or Device 1 (master\slave) > Transfer mode > PIO
