DiRT Showdown Performance

The 7970 is almost 50% quicker than the 7950 at 5760x1080? That can't be right.

And wondering why the 670 goes from a competitive lead against the 7950 at high to losing by a relatively wide margin at Ultra?

According to the site, Ultra includes:
"The first new feature in Showdown is an all new rendering system. Essentially this new system allows all the lights in the scene to be dynamic, rather than just rendering 2D glows. This is achieved by building global lists of all lights in the scene, and then using DirectCompute to produce a culled light list for tiled regions of the screen. During the actual Pixel Shader lighting phase, only the culled light list for a given pixel is processed. This makes it possible to have thousands of dynamic lights in a scene"

Is this an example of the better compute functionality of the Radeon cards pushing them over the top, or is this something else? I would think more games are going to be using intense lighting routines over the next few years, is this where compute is going to really pay off for radeon users?

That would be a fair guess. If more developers continue to push DirectCompute, Tahiti might actually age better than the current Keplers. It would be a huge win for AMD if the concept of a Forward+ engine takes off, since it heavily relies on compute for lighting. But it's probably nothing more than a pipe dream for AMD.
 
AMD HD 7900 vs GTX 600 cards are going to mirror the GTX 400 vs HD 5800 cards. Initially the GTX 480 cards were criticized for excessive heat and noise. But 2 years later the architecture of Fermi is shining in the latest games and a HD 5870 falls behind badly in the latest DX11 games like BF3, Crysis 2, Batman AC, Max Payne 3.
Even though the initial response to GTX 680 / GTX 670 cards is overwhelmingly positive I think they are going to age very fast when games that use complex DirectCompute calculations and use lots of bandwidth start coming out like Dirt Showdown. And the Tahiti 2 cards are going to be even more impressive. :)
