I am trying to update DirectX as I am under the assumption it doesn't update automatically with windows, but someone correct me if I am wrong. I can go to this link and download the file but whenever I try to run it, it starts to work but when it gets to initializing it says that setup could not download the file, please retry later or check network connection. This happens to me on Vista 64 bit and on XP 32 bit on my notebook. Anyone else get the same thing? Same thing happened last week too.

nope never had this problem.. why not try the full end user installer?

your firewall might be blocking it (software or hardware)

are u in admin mode to do the update?

I am running Avast with just the windows firewall and spybot s&d. I tried it with Avast disabled and uninstalled spybot and same thing. The windows firewall doesn't say its blocking it and I added the installer to the exceptions list just to be sure. I am using an Admin account for both.

Edit: Missed the installer in the extracted files of the full end user, will try it out. Thanks!

The full end-user installed fine. Thanks! I figured there was a full installer somewhere but it didn't stick out to me at first. I am not sure why the web update won't work on either machine though. I am guessing it may be something with the network, I am on a university campus.

I think the web update system has been down for a couple of weeks. Usually it would just detect what runtimes you are missing and download the rest....won't connect for me even if its a direct connection to the WAN.

I've had problems with the web installer recently, but it was with XP 64 bit. Try downloading the entire package. It weighs in around 100MB.

If you have a older version of the dxwebsetup.exe that you previously downloaded run that and it will update correctly. Many people have had an issue with the newest dxwebsetup.exe.

That must be it because I used dxwebsutup.exe on Vista64 just yesterday and it worked fine. I downloaded dxwebsutup.exe a few months back too.

It looks like the newest version of dxwebsetup just doesn't work right, atleast not for me. The full install worked fine. I don't have a previous version, but I have used the older ones with no problems.

The last two versions don't work for me either, same error. When I did the August 08 update via dxwebsetup it worked back then.. Dunno wtf microsoft is doing now..
