Tribes Vengance requires a sound card to be a DirectX®-compatible sound card. What does "DirectX®-compatible sound card" mean? Is this a microsoft software based sound only? Is there a sound card that provides a harware solution to relieve system overhead for DirectX? Maybe a card that does acceleration for DirectX.

That's damn near every sound solution made. DirectX is simply a driver compatability- really it just means that it's compatable with windows, because windows uses Directsound (part of DirectX) for sound.

Which version of DirectX® does the game require?

Some older sound cards do not fully support the version of DirectSound® included in newer versions of DirectX®. Thus, if your game requires DirectX® 8 or later, you may not hear some sounds correctly if you're still stuck with an old sound card.

I believe it's DirectX 9.0c. So...simply put...it's a can of worms?

DirectSound and DirectSound3D haven't been updated for several generations of DirectX- the latest revisions of DirectX have all been mostly graphics focused.
